Julianne Johnson w ill be featured in “ Starting Here, Starting N ow” at
the Portland H ilton. Ms. Johnson is a student at the University o f Portland
where she w ill earn degrees in Musical Theater and Psychology next spring
Among her credits are “ Hello D o lly.” “ Gypsy,” “ Much Ado About
N othing,” and the "M is e r,” all at the University o f Portland. A graduate
o f John Adams High School, she was involved in theater at that school.
"S tarting Here, Starting N ow” can be seen at the Portland H ilton Pub
Theater on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:30 pm. Dinner is optional
(287-1431).
“ Starting Here, Starting N ow” opened in New York in 1977. Critics
proclaimed: “ A winner! This music is what Broadway can’ t get enough
o f.”
He’s just your typical working guy. He paints his face red and white,
wears size 26 shoes, carries a big toy goose, rides an elephant, gets water
thrown in his face, bounces on a trampoline and changes clothes 33 times
every Saturday, but outside o f that he’ s just like you or me.
Oh yes! There’ s one other difference. No matter how sad, depressed,
tired, sore, or irritable he feels before he goes to work, he’ll be smiling and
joking and feeling wonderful as soon as he starts his job. He’s one o f 26
comical clowns who arrive at the Portland Memorial Coliseum fo r 8 u nfor
gettable performances o f Ringling Bros, and Barnum & Bailey Circus from
September 16 through September 19.
In keeping with P. T. Barnum’ s famous quote, “ Clowns are the pegs
used to hang Circuses on,’ ’ this year’s hilarious harlequins weave their
comical cord to tie together eye-popping, breath-catching acts in the 112th
Edition o f The Greatest Show On Earth. This all-new, better-than-ever
family entertainment extravaganza features death-defying daredevil Elvin
Bale who zooms up an inclined highwire on a motorcycle and risks life and
limb while attempting a two-man high on the w hirling “ Wheel o f Death” ;
and Migues Vazquez, the only man in recorded history to ever accomplish a
quadruple somersault on the flying trapeze, who w ill be attempting this
awesome feat in every performance. Audiences w ill also be amazed by
renowned tiger trainer Charly Baumann who fearlessly faces fifteen fero
cious felines in the Giant Steel Cage; two-foot-nine-inch M ichu, the w orld’s
tiniest trainer o f ponies and poodles; Axel Gautier and his ponderous
performing pachyderms; and a wealth o f astounding acrobats, strutting
stiltwalkers, dancing dromedaries, amazing aerialists, unicycling basket-
bailers and gorgeous showgirls.

Husband and wifa clowns Tom and Tammy Pariah ara part of tha
corps of clown prlncas and princaasas that anlivan avary parfor-
manca of tha bright naw 112th Edition of Ringling Broa. and Barnum
& Ballay Circus.
No fewer than 98 percent o f the clowns in Ringling Bros, and Barnum &
Bailey s two traveling circuses are graduates o f an unusual little coed college
in Venice, Florida. The curriculum includes acrobatics, juggling, slapstick,
pratfalls, stiltwalking, trampoline, unicycling and arena choreography,
tudents can improve their grades by hitting the teacher in the face with a
pie. No, it’s not Florida State. I t ’s Clown College — possibly the happiest
institution o f higher learning in the world!
All kinds o f people become clowns. The face-painting profession has
attracted nurses, nannies, painters, plumbers, trial lawyers and taxider
mists. Contrary to old stereotypes, Circus clowns are usually very happy
men and women who have a lot o f fun outside the arena. Tammy Parish,
veteran emale funster, says, “ Clown Alley is the scene o f an unending
^eriC?,<^,Pract'Ca* jokes, including shaving cream in shoes, and pinned pants
egs.
)ne joker recently put a big slab o f limburger cheese in the clown car
and almost drove his fellow funnypersons frantic.
Still in all, it’ s a wonderful life. Wayne Sidley. a seven-year veteran o f
Clown Alley, says, “ Nothing can compare with the personal satisfaction
that comes from the laughter and applause. I can have a bad headache or be
in a grumpy mood, but as soon as I get into the arena, I honestly feel better,
and when my routine is over and I come o ff the hippodrome track, I really
feelgood.
Tickets for the all-new 112th Edition o f Ringling Bros, and Barnum A
Bailey Circus are on sale at Meier & Frank (Downtown, Salem & Eugene,
and at G l Joe Stores (Beaverton Mall, North Portland, Eastport Plaza, Oak
Grove, Milwaukie, Rockwood at 18400 E. Stark).
