Landscape trees
need summer
pruning
P u ttin g landscape plants on a
regular pruning schedule prevents
them fro m becom ing overgrow n
and formless. Pruning also keeps
plants healthy by removing excess
wood, which has the added advan
tage o f improving air circulation to
the plant.
A cco rd in g to Ray M c N e ila n ,
Oregon State University Extension
home gardening agent, the late sum
mer is a good tim e to prune some
types o f landscape trees and rose
bushes.
’ ’ B irch , w a ln u t, dogw ood and
maple trees can be pruned lightly in
August or S e p te m b e r,”
says
M cN eilan. ’ ’ First cut out dead, dis
eased, injured, or weak growth, and
then remove shoots or twigs that are
growing in the wrong direction or
crow ding and crossing other
limbs.”
Before pruning the tree, have a
good idea o f the form you want the
tree to take and then prune accord
ingly, advises McNeilan.
A fte r rose bushes are done
bloom ing in the late sum m er, old
canes and crossing grow th in the
p lant can be pruned o u t. A good
guideline to use in pruning roses is
to cut stems back to where they are
about the thickness o f a pencil. This
will stimulate new rose bush growth
in the fall. Also cut out any diseased
growth.
W hen to spray
fall w ebw orm s
In late summer and early fa ll,
many ornam ental trees, such as a l
der and birch, and large shrubs with
soft foliage, such as lilacs, become
campsites for web-tent building fall
webworms. W aln u t and fru it trees
may also be attacked by this pest.
’ ’ F all webworm s s h o u ld n 't be
confused with tent caterpillars, a l
though the damage webworms in
flic t on plants is sim ila r to that
caused by tent c a te rp illa rs ,” says
Ray M cN e ila n , Oregon State U n i
versity Extension home gardening
agent.
F all webworm s feed on leaves
near the ten, like webbing they con
struct. W ebw orm s can severely
dam age or k ill sm all trees, and
smaller branches on large trees.
M ature webworms are about one
inch long and are pale yellow to
brown in color w ith yellow stripes
along each side, and a dusky stripe
along the back.
F or best w ebw orm c o n tro l, re
move and burn th e ir w ebbing as
soon as it is noticed.
Diazinon, Orthene or Dipel insec
ticide sprays are recommended for
webworm control on ornamentals.
Be sure to follow all label directions
on any chemical sprays used.
“ Spray as soon as the tents ap
p e a r,” M c N e ila n advises. Large
tents may be d iffic u lt to penetrate
unless a sprayer that develops a
strong spraying force is used.
Repeat applications may be neces
sary.
