the urge to grace the N B A flo o rs
again?
T he re tu rn o f W a lto n a n d /o r
Cowens w o u ld give the N B A some­
th in g it so re ly needs, a c o u p le o f
big-nam e w hite players. R ight now ,
L a r ry B ird is a b o u t th e o n ly b ig -
nam e w h ite p la y e r in the league.
A n d a ll the to p N B A centers, save
Jack S ikm a, are b la ck. A n d ju s t as
the P itts b u rg h P ira te s ’ c h ie f scout
lam ented th is season w hen ta lk in g
a b o u t the P irates, w h ite fans are a
lit t le re lu c ta n t to com e o u t and
w a tch a team d o m in a te d by b la c k
players.
P r o o f o f th a t was show n o n ly a
few weeks ago w hen th e C h ic a g o
B u lls trad ed A r tis G ilm o re , one o f
the to p fiv e centers in the N B A , to
the San A n to n io Spurs fo r D ave
C orzine and M a rk O lberding. Q uite
fr a n k ly , the B u lls needed a co up le
o f w h ite p la y e rs , e spe cia lly a fte r
d ra ftin g Q u in te n D ailey and seeing
th e ir firs t-ro u n d pick run in to tro u ­
ble even b e fo re p u ttin g on a B u ll
u n ifo rm . A fte r he made some ill-a d ­
vised remarks about his alleged rape
o f a U niversity o f San Francisco stu­
d e n t nurse, a n u m b e r o f g ro u p s
were after D ailey’s hide.
Some even threatened to b o y c o tt
B ill W a lto n played basketball the
o th e r n ig h t in a c o m p e titiv e a tm o ­
sphere f o r the fir s t tim e since the
1980-81 season. Yes, W a lto n , w ho
was an A ll-A m e ric a n at U C L A and
an o fte n - in ju r e d su pe rsta r in the
N B A , jo in e d a g ro u p o f U C L A
a lu m n i to play fo rm e r players fro m
the U n iv e rs ity o f N eva da -La s Ve­
gas.
W h a t’ s more, W a lto n played well
enough to lead a n um ber o f w rite rs
to th in k that he may be contem plat­
ing a comeback a tte m p t. In 34 m in ­
utes o f a ction , W a lto n , w ho led the
P o rtla n d T ra il Blazers to the N B A
t it le in *76-’ 77, scored 24 p o in ts ,
g ra bb ed 21 reb ou nd s and added
th re e assists, tw o steals a nd fiv e
blocked shots. Despite the fact that
U N L V had no p la y e r in the game
over 6-5, many observers are excited
by W a lto n ’ s play.
A f te r a ll, the 6-11 ce n te r had
played less than 25 m inutes o f bas­
ke tb a ll since he last in ju re d his le ft
fo o t on Sept. 26, 1980.
W a lto n , you w ill rem em ber, le ft
the T r a il B lazers som e years back
and sued them because he alleged
that he was allowed to play after the
team knew he had a fo o t in ju ry . L a ­
te r, he was sent to the San D ieg o
C lip p e rs , sig n in g a m u lti- m illio n
d o lla r c o n tra c t. W a lto n , w h o gets
his pay whether he plays o r n ot, has
yet to give the C lippers a game.
W h e th e r he is able to p la y up to
par o r n o t, the re tu rn o f W a lto n to
the San Diego team w o u ld ce rta inly
b oo st a tte n d a n ce , so m e th in g the
sagging fra n c h is e needs a lm o s t as
b adly o r m aybe even worse than it
needs wins.

ble that w ith tw o m ore w hite players
on their rosters, they could fin ish as
p o o rly as they d id last season and
s till im prove attendance figures.
E ven th o u g h m ost o f the N B A
teams aren’ t w illin g to adm it it, hav­
ing some w hite players on the roster
is e sse n tia l. R em em ber the New
Y o rk K n ic k s a c o u p le o f seasons
ago? T h e y had an a ll-b la c k ro s te r
and soon fo un d themselves being re­
ferred to as the “ N — erbockers.”
The o n ly team in the N B A w ith a
large co rp s o f w h ite p la yers is the
S A V E ’ 70
Boston C eltics, and thev should be
even s tro n g e r th is y e a r— th a t is, i f
they trad e R ick R obey. Robey is a
decent player and his m arket value
is increased by the fa c t th a t he is
w hite, so the Celts should have little
tro u b le g e ttin g a fin e p la yer in ex­
change fo r him .
This w rite r is sure that the Cleve­
lan d Cavs sh o u ld give a great deal
fo r Robey, i f they had it, since their
owner has already gone on record as
saying that he needed w hite stars to
id e n tify w ith.
O f co urse the N B A does have
another alternative: they could do as
the European basketball leagues and
the C anadian fo o tb a ll league does,
o r even as m y o ld h ig h school bas­
ketball coach d id .
