T h e new vicar at St. P h ilip is an
O regonian through and through. He
was born in M o ro , was educated at
the U n iv e rs ity o f O regon and jo u r ­
neyed to C a lif o r n ia to receive his
M a s te r o f D iv in ity degree in 1955.
H e was made priest by Bishop Ben­
ja m in D a g w e ll and spend m an y
years o f his early priesthood devel­
oping missions and churches in O re ­
g o n , in c lu d in g D a lla s and M o n ­
m outh.
Fa. Schadewitz was in the state o f
W ashington for a period o f tim e as
re c to r o f H o ly T r in it y C h u rc h in
H oquiam from I9 6 0 to 1970, and as
assistant-rector at C hrist Church in
Tacom a, from 1973 to 1980.

P h ilip as p rie s t-in -c h a rg e in 1981.
His home is in N .E . Portland where
he has lived fo r some time.

and D a v id K e lly , ch oirm aster, was
out o f tr a d itio n a l E p is c o p a l h y m ­
nals, but the o ffe rto ry music had a
different sound.

tion.

for the adult Dean children who en­
tertained each other and th e ir own
circles o f friends through the week.

T o ra n . M r . and M rs. A .T . Pernell,
aunt and uncle to the Dean children,
entertained the entire fa m ily at d in ­
ner at T iv o li Gardens.
The bride and bridegroom played
hosts on S u n d ay w hen they e n te r­
tained fam ily and friends at a boun­
teous b ru nch ju s t b e fo re they d e ­
parted fo r (h e ir h on eym o o n at the
Oregon Coast.
O n S u n d a y a fte rn o o n K ay and
John Toran entertained at their A la ­
meda home fo r K a y ’ s boss and his
w ife , G o v e rn o r V ic to r A tiy e h and
M rs. A tiyeh. Kay T oran is the A f f ir ­
m ative A ction O ffic e r fo r the State
o f O regon and is d irectly responsi­
ble to the governor.
T he reception, meant to be social
as Kay had wanted, had a little p oli­
tical flavor, but it couldn’ t be avoid­
ed since this is an election year. Kay
said she h o n e s tly w a n te d to “ let
people know how good M r . A tiyeh
really is ," and the best w ay was to
invite folks in to meet him in an in ­
fo rm a l w a y . H e m ust have m et
about 2 00-300 o f K ay's and Jo h n ’ s
close friends this way.
T here just happened to be a few
buttons with A tiy e h ’s name on them
in the Toran hallw ay. A nd a bumper
sticker or tw o.
