Urban League Tennis
Tournament Results
Greg Heinz is (he hottest tennis
player in the Portland area right
now. He came into the Urban
League Tournament immediately
following a single victory to take
first place in the singles of the Port
land Public Parks Tournament Au
gust 6th.
In doubles, Tom Clark and Hob
Horning, two outstanding senior
players, gave tournament fans a real
treat by taking Heinz and partner
John LaPlante (IIP Coach) to 3 sets
in the semi-finals.
Four Northeast Portland favor
ites walked away with trophies.
Harold Johnson and Rich Single-
ton, two Irving Park regulars, took
first and second place respectively in
the age-33-and-over men’s singles.
Al Clay took home the second place
honors in the men’s open singles.
Clay excited the crowd with a 3-set
victory over fourth seeded Hal Bar
ton in the semi-finals. Although he
lost in straight sets to Heinz 6-4, 6-4
in the final, he exhibited a superb
game o f solid ground strokes, in
cluding some spectacular passing
shots. Stanley Sykes took the Class
B men’s singles in a breeze. Sykes
was never seriously challenged, and
the 13-year-old Jesuit High School
player showed the potential of a
budding tennis star.
