Palestinian speaks on Middle East
\dnan Aehman. a member o f the
General Union o f Palestinian Stu
dents, told the Observer that his or
ganization is attempting to reveal to
the America:' people the U S. role in
Israel’s invasion o f Lebanon.
“ U S . money is being spent in a
state that is k illin g civilia ns and
leaving people homeless—what they
call a "mopping up’ o f the Palestin
ians 1 hey are really tryin g to de
molish the Palestinian entity and kill
anything called Palestinian.
“ This invasion comes as projected
by the Pl < 11 stinian Liberation
Organization] which is the only le
gitimate representative o f the Pales
tinian people The invasion was ex
pected because it fits into the so-
called peace settlement that the
United States ¡s imposing on the
area. Tl . Pl O has warned that such
an invasion would come this sum
mer.”
Aehman described two peace pro
posals The firs t— the proposal o f
the L S and the “ reactionary Arab
regimes" (such as Jordan’s and Sau
di Arabia's] has three parts:
1) For Israel to occupy Southern
Lebanon to the Itelia River, to en
sure Israel's northern border;
2) To destroy the PLO and the
Lebanese P a trio tic Movement so
they w ill have no influence in the
area;
2) To complete the Camp David
agreements as altered by the propo
sal ot the late king Fahd o f Saudi
Arabia The>e proposals are basical
ly the same as the Camp David ac
cords, according to Aehman, but
are more acceptable to the Arab
governments because they were pro
posed by Fahd The Arab govern
ments oppo ed the Camp David
process o would find it d ifficult to
accept these accords.
Fahd’s plan in c lu d e t^ ^
of the State of Israel a
o f a Palestinian state

type o f state this would

while Israel desires a
state with no military, v
policy controlled by Isrs
The second o ptio n
plan—called the Share
the Israeli defense m
proposed it:
1) To destroy the m ill
litical structure o f the 1
Lebanese Patriotic Mov
2) To create a govern!
anon that would be frl
rael;
3) To get Syrian tr<
Lebanon;
4) To elect some typ-
mental council in the
that would be called re
of the Palestinian peop
cooperate with Israel.
"Palestinians see the
being implemented in th
vasion,’ ’ Aehman said
have two points in c<
weaken or destroy the PLO and to
liquidate the Palestinian issue.
Yet the invasion is only one issue,
he explained. “ Since 1948 and be
fore Palestinian people—and there
are four m illio n —have been killed,
kicked out, living in refugee camps
. . . . It is their legitimate right under
in te rn a tio n a l law to ask fo r their
own homeland and to live in
peace.’’
"They keep kicking the Palestin
ians out o f the places they live; they
keep killing the people and the civi
lians—even killing the children so in
the future they cannot grow up and
be fighters. A ll o f the Palestinians
who live in the camps have nothing
to lose and they want the ir own
homes back. It's their legitim ate
right to resist such an occupation by
such a fascist government in their
ow n homeland.
“ So what is happening is that the
Israelis went into Lebanon—are sur
rounding Beirut—are putting a very
strong and firm siege on West Bei
rut. Actually no water and food and
no medical aid are being allowed
through to help the wounded people
in Beirut.
“ This fascist and this aggressive
invasion comes to show the nature
o f the Israeli governm ent—the
Zionist movement—point o f view.
This shows their expansionist policy
—their racist policy. Nobody in the
world can justify killing women and
children and civilians, just bombing
indiscriminately the civilian areas,
ju s t under the excuse that some
fighters are there among the
civilians.
“ I f the Israelis manage to destroy
the PLO and the Lebanese Libera
tio n Movem ent, there w ill be
another PLO. And if that one is de-

W hat was not anticipated was
that the actuarial tables then in use
at the time would not anticipate the
advances in science or the enormous
increases in medical and other main
tenance expenses.
“ We didn’t run out o f money,”
said Edwards, explaining the deci
sion to close down the Home, “ we
are tryin g to cut our losses (o f
$300,000 per year).”
When Mann merged with Willam
ette View Manor, the parties agreed
to sell the Mann Home property due
to the higher operating expenses for
the old building. A new structure
was to be b u ilt in Southeast P o rt
land on property already owned by
Willamette, and the Mann residents
would be transferred there.
But interest rates refused to fall
low enough to make fo llo w in g
through on that plan economically
feasible, Edwards said. Thus the de-
heavy laundry is cleaned by the
staff.
Not everything at Mann was as
b right as it could be, she added.
While most o f the staff is excellent,
Mrs. Pischer admitted that it ’s been
difficult with several cooks over the
year.
“ Sometimes they think they are
cooks when they are not,” she said,
noting that she was a cook herself
and did not want to say anything
negative about cooks. And then too,
she noted, the teenagers who serve
the food in the formal dining room
in the evening for the 30-odd resi
dents who are not confined to their
beds, sometimes have more gravy
on the outside o f the gravybowl
than in it. But that depends on how
carefully they were taught at home,
she added.
Edwards said several options have
