tainly a challenge in today’s world.
And the food budget is right up
there on Ihe front lines As other ex
penses raise and seem less flexible,
we try lo make up Ihe difference by
culling lood costs or al least holding
the line.
We all have lo cal, which means
we all have lo shop for food. Many
o f us shop more freq u ently than
needed because we d o n ’ t plan
ahead
Planning saves you m oney. Il
helps assure that you'll eat until Ihe
next planned shopping trip— which
is becoming a primary goal as bud
gets gel tighter.
Here are some specific steps to
help you gel more for your food
dollar:
1. Read Ihe food ads in your local
paper I his is usually a midweek is
sue If you don’t take the paper reg
ularly, it's well worth the price to
buy that issue from the newsstand.
Browse through the paper looking
for food specials, coupons and spe
cial prom otional ideas. The stores
ate doing battle, loo, so they're get
ting creative in trying to get your
business.
2. Plan your menus fro m these
ads If you actually take Ihe time to
write menus down you'll save mon
ey and time in the long run. I f you
haven't ever done this, start by plan
ning your main meals and just stock
up on a variety o f breakfast and
lunch items.
Having written menus helps you
with the "blahs,” "thaw s" and can
even add to your c re a tiv ity . The
" b la h s " arc those time when you
just can't gel inspired about fixing
one more meal. You can’ t think o f
anything lo fix, no one will give you
suggestions and y o u ’ re missing a
key ingredient in the things that do
come lo mind.

start thinking about dinner at 5 p.m.
and everything in Ihe freezer is froz
en exactly as it should be, which
makes h harder to fix dinner.
Menus help you with your creati
vity because you can actually pick
out a new recipe that “ sounds
good" and make sure you have all
the ingredients needed. T h at way
you don't get bored with the same
old stuff all the time. I t ’s also good
for your fam ily to face a few new
dishes— they shouldn’t be getting in
a rut cither.
3. Now that you know what
you ’ re going to fix , make a shop
ping list. If you’re shopping at more
than one store, group the sale items
and their prices under each store
name. That way if you run into one
o f the Hems that's cheaper you can
make the purchase with confidence.

Juice from one lemon
Combine the soy sauce, rind and
juice. Pul in turkey slices to m ari
nate for 20 minutes or longer. Pry in
a small amount o f butter for about $
minutes per side. Remaining m ari
nade may be added when slices are
turned.
The remaining turkey breast can
be cooked and made in to sand
wiches, casseroles a nd/or soup.
