Help for ashen skin
H A T CAUSES ashen skin
in black women? The
answer may lie in (he wrong
cleansing routine, diet, or both.
Surface skin (the epidermis)
consists of layers o f cells that arc
constantly being shed and renewed.
As cells on the surface mature, they
lose their pigment and become dried
out and dull. New cells are
generated beneath and replace the
older ones which flake o ff, carrying
with them wastes, bacteria and dirt.
This is the skin’s normal,
eliminative function. I f the skin
can’t throw o ff dead cells
efficiently, the cells accumulate at
the surface, dulling the glow and
translucency o f your complexion,
causing the ashen pallor. Proper
cleansing is therefore important in
the removal o f old cell layers that
cloud the complexion.
Cosmetologist Stanley James of
New York C ity’s Studio
International, whose talents as a
makeup artist and hair stylist are
sought out for Broadway shows and
stars o f stage and screen,
recommends a mild abrasive for
ridding the skin o f debris. Use of an
abrasive can be part o f a weekly
home facial, Stanley suggests.
’ ’ My approach is to deal with
problems as opposed to the
coverup,” says Stanley who names
among his clients Melba Moore,
Stephanie Mills, Leslie Uggams,
Diahann Carroll and Aretha
Franklin. “ Most black women want
things (hat are fairly simple that
they can deal with themselves.”
Stanley’s simple three-step
regimen for the care o f ashen skin
is: cleanse, moisturize, lubricate.
First, all dirt must be removed from
the skin by gentle rubbing with an
abrasive sponge and cleanser. A
very effective abrasive available at
drugstores is the "B u f-P u f"
sponge, a nonmedicated cleansing
sponge that clears the skin of its
ashy Film of dead cell particles. It
stimulates the skin, restoring its
translucency and glow, and leaves it
looking healthy and alive. (If soap is
used with the abrasive sponge it
should be the super fatted kind or a
moisture bar.)
The skin should be rinsed
thoroughly to ensure that no trace
of soap or cleanser remains. Apply
moisturizer immediately to protect
the skin from the drying effects of
air. At bedtime, use a light lubricant
after cleansing. Mineral oil should
be avoided because it is not
absorbed into the skin and may
actually increase dryness.
Stanley, whose makeup credits
include the cast o f such shows as
"The W iz,” "T im b uktu .”
"R aisin” and “ Bubbling Brown
Sugar,” cautions that makeup can
be drying, but he notes that it is
helpful because it protects the skin
from pollutants. "Y o u r best bet is
to use makeup that has the purest
ingredients you can find. 1
personally feel a lot o f women look
better without makeup, especially in
the summer when the sun evens out
all those yellow tones into gold. All
you need then is a nice blush to
bring out the checks, some lip color,
and a little mascara to dramatize the
eyes.”
A root cause o f the ashen skin
problem may be Vitamin A
W
deficiency. Vitamin A adds sheen to
the skin as well as the hair. It
preserves the skin’s elasticity and
smooth texture and combats dryness
and blemishes. A balanced diet with
foods containing Vitamin A, such as
eggs, margarine, fish liver oils, liver
and apricots, will correct many skin
disorders.
"Very often you will find that dry
skin, itchy skin, stems from our
diet,” Stanley observes. “ So many
things are ingrained in us from years
of bad eating habits.” Pork and
other fatty meats are bad for the
skin, he says. “ Vitamins A, D and E
arc good, but an excessive amount
of A and D will dry the skin. It is
always best to consult a nutritionist
when you have specific diet
problems.”
Here arc some tips for relieving
dryness and improving skin texture:
•Encourage moisture in your
skin; skin needs water to keep it
flexible. Remember, dryness can
cause wrinkling.
•Stimulate the skin with the
buffing action o f an abrasive
sponge, such as the “ B u f-P u f’
sponge, by Riker Laboratories.
•Natural oils helpful to the skin
—soy, sunflower, corn, peanut,
sesame seed and olive o il—may be
added to salad dressings.
•Give your skin a mayonnaise
facial or one made from a mixture
of melted butter and milk. Rub well
into the skin, leave on for ten
minutes, then rinse with tepid water.
•Peaches and bananas, rich in
natural oils, are excellent
moisturizers. Used directly on the
skin, they replace some o f the
moisture you lose from the drying
effects o f sun, wind and water.
Leave on for 10 to 15 minutes.
When rinsed, the skin will feel
smooth.
•Egg yolk is a beneficial mask for
dry skin.
