"Looking White" Is A Struggle
Growing up black in America is a problem that becomes even greater
when you’re light-skinned, claims the wife o f football great Lynn Swann.
23-year-old Bernadette Swann, the daughter o f Paul Robi o f the Platters,
says growing up was hard because black girls were always picking fights
with her, trying to cut her hair, and running her out o f school. She recalls
that tension increased when she brought her white (Argentinian) mother to
a P T A meeting.
Now Mrs. Swann is encountering problems in her modeling career. She is
often turned down for black modeling jobs because the clients think she’ll
photograph “ too w h ite .” Bernadette Swann says she’s tired o f ‘ ‘ lig h t
skinned models being ignored” and ‘‘light-skinned people being slighted.”
She is also tired o f “ these terrible conflicts blacks have among themselves
. . .because you’re a light-skinned woman (people think) you have it easy
. . . i struggle too.”
