FASHIONS
Y N O W many o f your friends
B
have got the curly look and
you’ve seen that increasingly
popular hairstyle in all o f its aspects
— from sassy to sophisticated,
subdued to sensational.
You know that it can be worn
long, dripping with sensuous
tendrils; it can be lush and full,
bouncing with movement and
swing; or it can be short and pixie
with geometric shaping or in a curly
gamin cap.
You know the curls are very
popular with men as well. The male
look is shiny, textured and cut to fit
the shape of the face.
You like the soft and free casy-
care aspects o f the style, but perhaps
you're just not sure whether curls
will suit you and the way you live.
Before you have your hair
permanently curled, it must be
natural (what beauticians call
“ virgin h air") and in good
condition.
You can't get a curl if you’ve had
a sodium hydroxide relaxer in your
hair within the last six months. The
curl will “ take" on the new growth,
but the relaxed hair will stay straight
and may break o ff.
I f you hot-comb your hair and it
has been burned or damaged, it
would be best to wait until those
sections have grown out before
having your curl.
The same goes for bleached or
colored hair. While new techniques
are being developed to color hair
after a permanent curl is in, it's still
very tricky business.
Your beautician should examine
sections o f your hair to determine
strength, elasticity and moisture

content. I f any part is weaker than
the rest (this can happen if you sleep
on one side more often), a protein
conditioner should be applied to the
hair and left a few minutes longer
on the weaker section.
The basis o f any attractive hair
style is a good cut. The type o f cut t
must depend on your facial bone
structure, the style o f clothing you
favor and what length compliments
your body type. You should
consider the shape o f your head and
the length o f your neck before
deciding on the cut.
After the cut, you're ready for
the curling process. It can take
anywhere from 116 hours to 3 hours
depending upon your beautician’s
style.
I f you are curling your hair
yourself with your "a t home” curl
kit, remember the product must be
used in strict compliance with all
directions and warnings to avoid
skin and scalp irritation.
Once your curls are in, keep in
mind that the style depends heavily
on proper moisture balance, so
there are some care cautions:
•Y o u must condition your hair
well after shampooing. Since it has
been chemically processed, the
Intensive Conditioner should be
applied to replace moisture.
•Y o u must use a curl activator on
your style every day to help you
maintain the moisture. The
activator can come in three
forms— an instant curl moisturizing
spray, a gel activator or a creme
activator.
•Y o u should apply an oil sheen
spray to add shine and moisture to
the curls, when needed.

a week and be sure to use a very
gentle shampoo. I f you swim every
day or often, be sure to wear a
secure cap and condition your hair
regularly.
• I f your hair is dry and brittle, if
your curl pattern is not as defined
when dry, you may be neglecting
some aspects o f your care regimen.
Be sure to apply your moisturizer
and spray once a day.
There may be occasions when you
want to change your look entirely
for a special event. You’ll be happy
to know that you can blow dry your
hair or set and dry your hair with
the curly permanent in it. But
because you want to keep the

occasions should be kept to a

Then, consider these advantages:
• Your hair is permanently curled
and you can toss away your rollers.
•Y o u r hair is soft and you can run
your fingers through it to bring your
style back into place.
•Y o u can vary your style, if your
hair has length, with combs,
upsweeps or by pinning back the
front and sides.
•Y o u only need to touch up your
curl roots every three months.
•W hen you wash and condition
your hair, you let it dry naturally—
no more blow dryers, no more
sitting under hot hairdryers. A few
flicks o f the fingers and you’re on
your way.
