Bathroom ventilation spells dampness doom
RENT CONCRETE FO R M S
effective way to expel them is with
an exhaust fan installed in the bath
room.
You may not be aware o f it, but
there's a good chance "dampness
d em o n s" are on the loose in your
ho m e, doing th e ir worst to cause
damage and discomfort.
T ellta le signs that dampness de
mons are around are fogged mirrors
and condensation o f m oisture on
walls and elsewhere in your b ath
room after use o f shower or tub fa
cilities. But far more worrisome ef
fects o f the demons in the bathroom
are peeling paint or wall covering,
rusting o f fixtures or cabinets, fo r
m ation o f m ildew and warping o f
doors. Also, the demons may cause
paint to peel around the bathroom
window outside the house and wet,
stained, molded or rotted areas in
in sulatio n or boards in the attic
above the bathroom.
The demons are created through
the normal use of tub or shower fa
cilities which puts an excessive
amount o f moisture in the air. Use
o f these facilities also results in an
increase in water vap o r pressure
and it ’s this pressure which forces
the water droplets through walls,
ceilings, cracks and other openings,
where they can do their damage.
Recent tests done at Texas A & M
University under the sponsorship of
the H o m e V e n tila tin g In stitu te
( H V I) , clearly show that excessive
moisture and water pressure in the
b ath ro o m can be controlled w ith
proper ventilation. In an unventil
ated b ath ro o m , the tests showed,
the relative humidity (percentage of
moisture in the air compared to the
m oisture the a ir could hold at the
same tem perature) reached 99 per
cent during the use o f the shower
and remained at 98 per cent for 25
minutes thereafter. By contrast, rel
ative hum idity in a bathroom with
an exhaust fan providing eight air
changes an hour (as specified by the
U .S . D epartm ent o f Housing and
H V I standards) in operation peaked
at 97 per cent, fell to 84 per cent ten
minutes after the shower, and to 79
per cent, or near the starting point,
25 minutes after the shower.
W h ile expelling dampness de
mons is one o f the primary advan
tages o f proper bathroom ventila
tion, it is not the only one. Ventilat
ing fans also help control bathroom
tem peratures and clear the a ir o f
odors, vapors which might be harm-

expel the demons before they can begin their dirty work

For a re lativ ely sm all expense,
bathroom ventilation offers protec
tion, minimizes the need for clean
ing, and enhances your com fort. I f
your bathroom is unventilated, you
should consider rectifying the situa

want to determine if the ventilation
is sufficient.

•C o lo r can be used to alter the
perception o f the roof. A light-col
ored ro o f, for example, attracts the
eye and directs vision upwards.
Used on a low house or unusually
small roof, a light-colored roof will
provide added dimension. A dark
colored roof can be used for the op
posite effect— making an unusually
steep roof seem less towering.
•Another design element in roof
ing is dimension. Three-dimensional
asphalt shingles add depth creating
bold shadowlines.
•In s te a d o f using contrasting
colors, consider earth tone shades
fo r blending a home w ith its sur
roundings. The muted shades o f
beiges, buffs, and browns, can also
be used to coordinate the roof with
masonry walls.
Besides roof color and dimension,
choose a roofing material that o f
fers added durability as well as ex
cellent p ro te c tio n . T h ree -d im en

Roof color, texture provide decoration
I f color and texture play such a
vital role in the exterior appearance
o f a home, why should the ro o f re
main dull and lifeless? It shouldn’t.
R oofing manufacturers have in
troduced new products in recent
years that offer greater flexibility in
design. T h ro u g h the use o f color
and texture, it’s now possible for the
homeowner to start exterior deco
rating right from the top— with the
roof.
Just as color and texture can en
hance a ro o fs design, the improper
use o f color can detract fro m a
home's visual appeal.
•Although siding and trim colors
can be changed easily and with some
regularity, you can expect to “ live
with” your roof for many years— so
select its color carefully. Do not use
more than three different colors for
siding, trim and the roof. I f you’re
prone to changing trim and siding
colors o fte n , select a neutral ro o f
color capable o f complementing a
number o f shades.

Pull shades on heat loss
When it comes to rating the worst
squanderers o f home energy, w in
dows rank second only to an uninsu
lated a ttic , according to the U .S .
Department o f Energy.
In winter, windows are especially
energy-wasteful. They are responsi
ble fo r as much as 35 per cent o f
heat loss in a typical house. T h a t’s
because window glass is a conductor
o f heat. In fact, 3 to 4 times more
costly furnace-generated heat is lost
through the window than through
the sash around it.
In a study conducted at the Illin
ois In s titu te o f Tech n olo gy, re
searchers tested out standard w in
dow shades that retail for less than
$6 each. Their findings: shades keep
in 24 to 31 per cent of the heat that
normally escapes through windows.

The Illin o is Tech findings are
good news during this high-cost fuel
era. Less heat loss means less fuel
waste and lower fuel bills. The re
searchers estimate that proper w in
dow shade use can chop as much as
8 cents o ff each heating dollar for a
typical home in a moderate climate.
Dollar-for-dollar, window shades
are the homeowners best investment
in fighting the high cost o f keeping
warm during the cold, cold months
o f winter.
