O reg o n ’s Leann W arren is
expected to double at U tah. She’s

Students head for tourney
The Oregon high school (rack and
field state meet will open Thursday
at Hayward field in Eugene. Q uali
fying will begin at 10:00 a.m. with
the finals scheduled for 12:00 Satur
day a fte rn o o n . G ra n t o f the P IL
should be a strong contender for the
boys crown won the last two years
by powerhouse South Eugene. Earl
ier this year the Grant Generals be
came the first team in six years to
best the Axemen by edging them in
the Centennial Invitational.
Grant will send a 21 -man contin
gent. while South Eugene will coun
ter with 16.
Generals won't win many indivi
dual titles, but their numbers could
very well make the difference, much
like U C L A in last Saturday's PA C -
10 championship. The Grant thin-
clads are among the leaders in only 5
events. B ut, however, those five
events could produce some 50
points. Grant's super Andy M ott is
coached third in the triple jump with
a best o f 46-116, but with the com
petition Mot*, could easily emerge
victorious. The 6-2 flyer w ill also
run on both the 400-meter and the
1600-mcter relay teams.
Grant's time o f 42.6 ranks second
to Aloha's 42.4 in the short race and
their 3:21.7 is third behind Medford
(3:18.7) and Klamath (3:21.2) in the
1600.
R ichard H o llis o f G ra n t is a
strong contender in the high jum p
where he has a best o f 6-914 and
ranks fourth behind Steve Green o f
Pendleton (6-11).
W endell Robinson (1 4 -2 ) is our
pick to win the 110-meter hurdles.
R obinson, th ird -y e a r m an, from
Grant needs only some good weath
er to improve his times. Sunshine is
predicted for Saturday and the Gen
erals could very well shine, too.

Q. / am interested in playing
football again. What kind o f semi-
pro leagues are there? - Marcus
Robinson, Lake City, Fla.
A . It is probably too late for this
year, Marcus. Most semi-pro clubs
play during the summer. There are
some clubs in your area, such as the
Panam a C ity A m erican F o o tb all
A ssociation franchise and the
Florida Statesmen o f the A F A . I ’ve
sent you the names and addresses of
people you should contact. But
d o n ’ t expect to get rich playing
sem i-pro fo o tb a ll. M ost players
only receive around $50 a week, and
if you’re injured while playing, the
insurance you have at work may not
cover the medical costs.
Q. Is Sugar Ray L eo n ard ’s
detached retina as serious as the
newspapers make it seem? - Jimmy
Allen, Houston, Tex.
A. Yes, it is. I f Leonard were to
tight again and take a heavy blow ti
the eye, the retina could possibl'
become detached again. M on
serious damage to the retina couh
lead to a loss o f sight in the eye
Leonard says he’ll wait until the eyi
fully heals before he fights again
My guess is that he will fight again
even though he does not need the
money.
Q Twice while reading "Ask
Barry, " I ’ve seen you pick Larry
Holmes over Gerry Cooney. Now
that the fig h t is getting closer, and
most everybody else in the media is
picking Cooney, who do you stand?
•- Ms. Linda Smith, Jacksonville,
Ha.
A. Holmes.
