T h e U n iv e rs ity p resents th e

have made “ outstanding c o n trib u ­
tions to society, p a rtic u la rly to the
state o f O re g o n , b e y o n d those
w h ich are im p lie d by th e in d i­
v id u a l’ s p ro fessio n al c a re e r,** and
who have “ demononstrable interest
in and c o m m itm e n t to th e values
which higher education represents.”
Judge S chw ab, who was born in
P o rtla n d and graduated fro m L in ­
coln H igh School, earned his law de­
gree fro m N orth w estern C ollege o f
Law (now Lewis and C la rk ) in 1939.
F o llo w in g service w ith th e A rm y
during W o rld W a r I I , he began the
practice o f law in P o rtla n d . H is le­
gal career included service as Judge
o f the M u ltn o m a h C o u n ty C irc u it
C o u rt from 1959 to 1966, and on the
Oregon C ourt o f Appeals fro m 1969
to his re tire m e n t in 1981 as C h ie f
Judge.
W h ile engaged in his d is tin ­
guished legal career, Judge Schwab
also was a ctive in c o m m u n ity ser­
vice. H e was a member o f the P ort­
la n d S cho o l B o a rd fr o m 1950 to
1959, serving three times as C h a ir­
man. H e also served the School Dis
tric t as a m em b er o f its R ace and
E d u c a tio n C o m m itte e in 1 9 6 3 -6 4 .

o f T e k tr o n ix since 197 1 . H e has
been w ith th e c o m p a n y since th e
mid-1950s when he began w ork as a
te c h n ic ia n . H e rose ra p id ly in the
com pany, spending ten years in E u ­
ro p e h e lp in g to establish th e elec­
tro n ic s m a n u fa c tu r e r ’ s overseas
operations fro m 1958 to 1968. H e is
on th e B o a rd s o f U .S . B a n c o rp ,
P o r tla n d G e n e ra l E le c tr ic , and
Floating Point Systems.
W a n tla n d has been a c tiv e in
U nited W a y , serving as President in
VERNON CHATMAN
1976 and as Cam paign Director this
year. H e is a strong believer in the
volunteer approach to social service
and firs t b ecam e in v o lv e d w ith
U nited W ay when he volunteered to
w ork on the agency’s budget. W a n t-
land also is member o f the Portland
State U niversity Foundation Board
and served as C hairm an o f the A m ­
e ric a n E le c tro n ic s A s s o c ia tio n in
1975.

izers o f the P ortlan d U rb an League
in 1945. O r ig in a lly fro m S h re v e ­
p o rt, Louisiana, C hatm an graduat­
ed w ith honors fro m D illia rd U n i­
versity in N ew O rleans in 1935. H e
ta u g h t school in S h re v e p o rt u n til
1942 when he began work as a ware­
house supervisor at Barksdale A ir ­
fie ld th e re . In 1 9 4 5 , C h a tm a n

shipyards. H e worked fo r the S .P .&
S. R ailroad from 1945 to 1968 when
he was n am ed D ire c to r o f E d u c a ­
tio n fo r th e U rb a n L e a g u e . H e
earned an M .E d . fro m the Universi­
ty o f Portland in 1972.
C hatm an has served on numerous
educational and civic committees in­
cluding advisory boards fo r C oncor­
dia C o lle g e , P o rtla n d C o m m u n ity
C o lle g e , O re g o n S tate U n iv e rs ity
S cho o l o f E n g in e e rin g , P o r tla n d
P u b lic S c h o o ls , an d th e O re g o n
H e a lth Sciences U n iv e rs ity . A t the
U n iv e rs ity o f P o r tla n d , C h a tm a n
counsels and recruits undergraduate
s tu d ents. H e has o b ta in e d m o re
than S I m illio n in scholarships and
loans fo r d is a d v a n ta g e d students

G erald “ Jerry” D entler was forced
to re tire w hen d octors discovered
that he had m ultiple sclerosis.
H is m a rria g e o f 30 years ended
soon after.
Discouraged? N o t at a ll. D entler,
51 and a Beaverton resident, is find ­
ing a new life in volunteerism.
H e was a safety inspection engin­
eer fo r fiv e o f his 30 years w ith
P P & L and is now vo lu n te e rin g his
tim e in s p e c tin g th e b u ild in g s and
equipment at M erid ian P ark H ospi­
ta l and P o rtla n d C o m m u n ity C o l­
lege.
W h ile w orking for P P & L he com­
piled an enviable record o f 25 years
w ithout a lost-time accident.
H e said that when he was told he
had m u ltip le sclerosis ( M S ) , deep
states o f depression and contem pla­
tio n o f suicide w recked his m a r­
riage. A nd although his w ife offered
to stay on as his h o u s e k e e p e r, he
filed fo r the divorce.
A f t e r o v e rc o m in g th e in itia l
shock o f h avin g M S he c o ntacted
M eridian Park Hospital and became
a volunteer safety inspector fo r the
hospital.
“ A fte r th a t, I th o u g h t I co uld
handle a little m ore so I contacted
S c o tt B e n n e tt, s ta f f a tto r n e y and
risk manager at P .C .C . Since then, I
have inspected all o f Sylvania C a m ­
pus an d a b o u t h a lf o f C a s c a d e ’ s
Campus and before I am through, I
w ill inspect a ll o f P . C . C . ’ s f a c ili­
ties.”
Bennett said Dentler is inspecting
everything th a t relates to safety at
P .C .C . H e cam e in lo o k in g fo r
something to do and “ has been do­
ing a fine jo b .”
Bennett explained that D e n tle r’ s
volunteerism is just another step in
the college’ s continuous safety in ­
spections which include the liab ility
