The year 1907 was when it all began. . .
T
H E F IR S T A N N U A L Rose Festival was held and Carrie Lee
Chamberlain, daughter o f the Governor, was Queen Flora o f the
Festival. In 19I4, the first Rose Festival queen selection honored Miss
Thelma Hollingsworth. The custom of selecting “ Rex Oregonus” (King)
was discontinued. The present system o f selecting queen and court from
Portland High Schools, one representing each school, was adopted. In
1936, the Junior Rose Festival became an official part o f the Portland Rose
Festival. To the delight of many Oregonians, the fun center was established
as an integral part o f the Festival etc., etc., etc.
The present day festival is building up momentum. The date of the 1982
Queen Selection and Coronation is slated for Friday, June 4 in the Civic
Auditorium at 8 p.m. and the mystery o f it all will fulfill one princess’
fantasy o f being crowned the new Queen o f Rosaria— her reign to be one
year. Closure o f two high schools in the Portland Public School District
reduces the 1982 court to eleven princesses. The Cinderella Syndrome
begins with pampering from head to toe.

Scheduling and routine
A Rosarían, with a Benson driver, will pick up each princess at her home
in a beautiful new Pontiac and return her at the end o f the day’s activities
during Rose Festival Week. Prior to Rose Festival activities, parents must
accompany their princess to the starting point and transport them home
daily. Court protocol is tight— rules and guidelines are set by the Rose
Festival Directors— as the community watches— no smoking, no drinking,
sunglasses permitted only for certain occasions, no excessive jewelry— and
most important— they must always be ready according to schedule, so that
no one is kept waiting. Parents’ involvement varies according to their
schedule. Usually parents receive invitations to attend various civic Cub
meetings, such as Portland Chamber o f Commerce, Kiwanis Luncheon,
etc., on a no-host basis.

Traditionally Meier and Frank has offered hair grooming as a bonus to
the wardrobe provided.
Make-up is given with pleasure to the delights o f the princess by a chosen
artist from M & F Beauty Salon and Skin Care Center. Instruction in
grooming (most important) and finesse in the “ how-tos’ * o f poise and
charm was presented by yours truly, Cora Smith, in the auditorium o f
Meier and Frank. The basic skills featured were how to model, wave, shake
hands and greet an audience.
Barbara Giesy is the wardrobe director for the Rose Festival. She selects
the wardrobe from companies like Vavrivan (which provides accessories
such as purses and jewelry), Kafoury (which provides blouses and
rainwear), Nike, and Oregon’s own three— White Stag, Jantzen, and
Pendleton.

The setting o f the Coronation— for those o f you who have not previously
viewed this event— offers an exceptional treat this year. The Rose Gardens
will come alive and will provide the background and props for this year’s
coronation. The stage at the Civic Auditorium will be aglow at “ curtain
call,” and the audience will view with pleasure the trees and roses o f
Washington Park as well as the artistic architectural design concepts o f
Reed Stage Productions. Enter Margie Boulie and her burst o f song— center
stage is focused and we hear— “ As the Parade Passes B y. . . Everything will
be coming up roses.” A newsboy enters shouting, “ Extra, extra, read all
about i t . . . . ”
Saturday marked an historical event for the black community as Royal
Rosarian, Michael Jordan, Honored Chaplain for the 1982 Festival brought
the blessings o f the Rose and its Princess Court to Bethel A .M .E . Church.
For this event, the court dressed in teal cotton sportswear and were a
beautiful sight at the alter rail.
The Escorts will be the drivers from Benson and will be wearing Tuxedo’s
from Cromwell. As o f this writing, they will be wearing brown.

Meier and Frank sells items o f their wardrobes at cost, furnishes the
Headquarters, the fittings and extra accessories. Each company does
fittings for their own clothes. Paula Marineu and Patty Bently are making
the coronation dresses (3 Vi each). The Queen’s dress (chosen prior to
princess selection) is provided in a size IO, usually— hopefully it will fit.
This court could be difficult as the range in height is from 3 ' I ' to 6 '2 *—
average height being 3 '8 *.
In addition to being given a total wardrobe, the primary attraction for the
princess is the “ Bonus Stipend’ ’— the Rose Festival Scholarship. This is
good for any College or University in Oregon as long as the princess attends
school. Money will be sent directly to the school o f the princess' choice. The
total amount o f the scholarship is SI ,000— to be paid on a pro-rated basis,
by semester or quarter,
