C arl Bird: after two years at
Arizona Western, Carl finished at
the University of California, Berke
ley, then played overseas in Italy
and the Philippines. He is presently
working for an insurance company
in San Francisco.
Charles Channel: went to Port
land State University, then to the
University of H a w a ii-H ilo . He is
presently working in Portland.
Ronnie Cole: played for Universi
ty of San Diego, then spent a year
with the Globetrotters. He is pre
sently working as an agent for pro
fessional athletes in Los Angeles.
Tony Hopson: after playing at
Mt. Hood Community College, he
finished at Willamette University.
In 1977 Tony participated in the
Ttailblazer rookie camp. Currently,
he is teaching at Lincoln High
School here in Portland where he is
also the head women’s basketball
coach.
Phil Lathan, Finley Hammond,
Albert Redeau, Greg Brown, Mike
McKinney, Gerald Deloney, Rick
W hitlow, and Donald Jenkins will
also play in the Game of Champs.
Phil Hopson will lead his *78 Jef
ferson teammates. Coached by
Bobby Harris these Demos took
third in the state tourney after losing
to Parkrose in the semi-finals. The
starters include:
Phil Hopson: returns to the Uni
versity of Idaho this fall to finish his
fourth year with the Vandals. This
past season he was second in the na
tion in field goal percentage and was

Jefferson holds'Game of Champs'
Spectators will have a chance td
turn back the hands of time when
they cheer on the team of their
choice at the Jefferson High School
Game of Champions. Saturday,
May 22 at 8 pm. the 1972 team
which took the state A A A basket
ball title will return to face the 1978
team which finished third in the
state tourney.
The game, a fund raiser for the
Daryl LaGrone Memorial Scholar
ship Fund, will feature half-time en
tertainm ent, music provided by
J e ff’ s award winning music pro
gram, and a contest between
brothers. The winner of the L a
Grone Scholarship will be an
nounced at half time. Admission is
$2, and tickets are available at (he
door.
Brotherly love will be tested as
Phil Hopson, an all-city choice in
*78 and more recently fam iliar to
sports fans as an NCAA star on the
Idaho Vandals squad, squares o ff
against his brother Tony, an a ll
tourney selection in ’72. The Redeau
brothers, Charles ( ’78) and Albert
(’72), will also compete against each
other as well as Don (’72) and How
ard (*78) Jenkins.
Several other JHS alums will join
the brother duos. Nearly all the ’72
team coached by Jack Bertell be
here for the game. They include the
starting Five:
Ray Leary: finished at San Diego
Slate after playing varsity for two
years. He is currently working at
Tubman Middle School.

Ron Ranson: played at Los An
geles Southwest, then returned to
Oregon to play for Chemeketa
Community College. He is now at
tending Portland State University.
Don Ranson: went to Everett
Community College in Everett,
Washington, then transferred to
Lane Community College in Oak
land, California. He currently lives
in Portland.

now finishing his degree in commu
nications at Oregon State Univer
sity.
Charles Redeau: played at Walla
W alla Community College for a
year, then at Clackamas Commu

tends Eastern Oregon State College
in LaGrande where he is playing
football.
Brian Hughes: attended the Uni
versity of Washington for two years
where he was an honor roll student,
then transferred to Pcpperdine
where he is completing his studies.
In addition, Bruce Jones, H ow
ard Jenkins, Howard Hornbuckle,
and Charles Fair will also be suited
up in the blue and gold.
According to Tony Hopson, re
union organizer, this is just one in a
series of events leading to the ten-
year reunion planned for the Class
of ’ 72. July 31 and August I the
class will hold a two-day celebration
at The Cosmopolitan Air Tel. For

’72. is coordinating publicity. A tec
shirt designed especially for the
summer reunion will go on sale at
the game.
A large turnout is expected. Ad
vance tickets are available from
coaches and Jefferson’s varsity
basketball players. Tickets will also
be available at the door.
