Food drive returns for 11th year
Project Second W ind, the annual
canned food drive, is returning for
the I Ith year to help feed hungry
people in the Portland metropolitan
area. On Saturday, M ay 8 th , stu
dents will canvass neighborhoods in
M u ltn o m a h , W ashing to n , and
Clackamas Counties asking for do
nations o f canned food. Elementary
and m iddle schools w ill hold in
school food collections from M ay
3rd-May 7th.
This year’s goal is to raise 50,000
pounds o f non-perishable food for
local emergency helping agencies.
These agencies provide emergency
food boxes to families and in d iv i
duals with nowhere else to turn.
Transportation for volunteers will
be provided on M ay 8th by clubs
from Region Three o f the Pacific

Cooney will win
Sometime in June Jerry Cooney
and Larry Holmes will square o ff to
decide the heavyweight cham pion
ship o f the world. Cooney will win.
The time is past for Larry Holmes.
He has certainly had a long and glo
rious reign. Although he has never
received the acclamation given M u
hammad A li, he has certainly pros
pered and should be fixed financial
ly for life.
T h e re ’ re only two serious con
tenders on the h o rizo n , M ichael
Dokes ranked number two by both
W B A and W B C and Greg Page,
ranked third by W B A and sixth by
WBC.
Page, who hails from Louisville,
has all the tools but is lacking in that
one im portant departm ent: deter
m in a tio n . Page at 6-2 has all the
tools necessary to become a great
fighter. H e ’s nim ble. H e ’s quick,
and has a great jab. Because o f his
lack o f d ete rm in atio n , he often
comes in overweight. And because
o f the weight problem his upper
body strength is not what one would
expect from a legitim ate heavy
weight contender.
Page took on the atting Jimmv
Young in a twelve-round U S W B A
championship fight and was some
thing less than impressive.
In his prime Jimmy Young had a
reputation for making fighters look
bad and at 33 and 240 pounds, plus
being on the other side o f the moun
tain, he still made Page look bad. At
this p o in t, Greg Page is only a
dreamer in the heavy-weight d iv i
sion.
D yn am ite Dokes w ill p robably
fight the w inner o f the H olm es-
Cooney fracas and w ill win the
heavy-weight championship within
the next eighteen months. Dokes is a
complete fighter who has heart, de
termination, and a strong punch. In
his earlier am ateur days, he. like
Page, tried to emulate the great A li.
A li had skills that no other heavy
weight had ever had before or after.
Dokes soon learned that A li’ s way
was not his way. He came down o ff
of his toes and became a flat-footed
dynamite puncher.
Dokes* handlers have brought
him along well. The prediction here
is that the Dokcs-Cooney match will
set an a ll-tim e record for money
earned.

Due to so many people being out
o f work, local hunger is becoming a
more serious problem. According to
Doug Rogers, D ire c to r o f Snow-
C A P , and East M ultnom ah County
helping agency, " W e are now help
ing 50 per cent more people than we
were a year ago. We must have the
community’s support through Pro
ject Second W ind or we will not be
able to continue feeding people in
desperate need.”
Sen. H atfield and Rep. A uC oin
are honorary co-chairpersons for
P roject Second W in d . T he food
drive is sponsored by the Food Bank
and the T ualatin Valley Food Cen
ter w ith support from the C ity o f
P o rtla n d and M u ltn o m a h and
Washington Counties.
