HOFFMAN CONSTRUCTION
COMPANY: IT'S HISTORY...
Established in 1922 by L .H .
H o ffm a n , H o ffm a n Construction
Company is one o f the oldest con
struction companies in the western
United States.
The o riginal five-m an s ta ff has
grown to include over 200 profes
sional engineers, technicians, esti
mators, schedulers and support per
sonnel. The company’s first job on
record was the Hodes Garage built
at a price o f $12,500. The building is
still in use today and is now C line
Glass Company at 1135 S.E. Grand.
From that meager beginning, the
company began to experience quick
growth. By 1925, H o ffm an had its
first contract fo r more than
$100,000 and just one year later its
first m illion dollar project: the 16-
story Public Service Building, now
the corporate headquarters for Pa
cific Power & Light Co. It was one
o f the largest buildings on the West
Coast at the time it was built.
Hoffm an built a number o f other
o ffice buildings and the P ortland
x " 5 —L -
T h eatre which is now the P a ra
mount. The company built post o f
fices, schools, warehouses, dams
and a variety o f industrial plants.
Company operations expanded into
Seattle and other areas throughout
the Pacific Northwest.
The company played a major con
struction role in the development o f
the pulp and paper industry. When
W orld W ar I I struck, H o ffm an re
sponded by building a number o f
defense related projects including
several hospitals, one o f which is the
Veterans A dm inistration Hospital
in Vancouver, Washington.
A fter the war, H offm an returned
to its activities for pulp and paper
clients such as C row n Z ellerbach,
W eyerhaeuser, Boise Cascade,
Longview Fibre and Georgia-Pacif
ic. During the early 1950s H offm an
built the first television transmission
site in Oregon on Council Crest and
pioneered the first “ lift-s la b ” and
precast concrete “ tilt-up” construc
tion in the Northwest.
From I9 6 0 through 1970, H o f f
m an’s work gradually shifted from
industrial to commercial construc
tio n . A m o n g its more recognized
projects in Portland include the 40-
story First Interstate Bank T ow er,
the G eo rg ia-P acific B u ilding, the
Federal O ffic e B u ild in g , C ro w n
Plaza, U .S . N ational Bank Plaza,
Multnom ah Athletic Club, St. V in
cent H o s p ita l, One M a in Place.
Hoffm an also built the containment
structure and eight other m a jo r
buildings for Trojan Nuclear Plant.
H o ffm a n 's grow th led to an
opening o f an office in Anchorage
in 1976 to p artic ip a te in the con
struction developm ent in A laska.
H offm an has served as construction
manager for several m ajor projects
in Alaska including the Anchorage
Federal Office Building.
H o ffm an ’s new work in Portland
includes the new Portland Building,
the most prominent post-modern ar
chitectural building in the country.
D irectly opposite o f the Po rtlan d
Building, construction is in progress
for the Justice Center.
The success o f the company is due
to its employees. Hoffm an is a peo
ple company, an equal opportunity
employer, serving the people o f the
Pacific Northwest.
