Wow! What a game!
Then there was one!
by A t McGilberry
by Ron Sykes
Wow! What a game! It was ail we
could ask for and more; it was the
Super B owl, Heavyweight Cham*
pionship fig h t, W o rld Series, all
rolled in to one. The finals o f the
N .C .A .A . Basketball Tournament
featu ring G eorgetow n and N o rth
Carolina, Georgetown from the up
start Big East Conference and North
C a ro lin a from the established
A .C .C . Conference going to war at
the Superdom e in New O rleans.
61,000 people at a college basketball
game—can you believe that?
T h a t’s how far the college jpe<>
tacle has come: millions across the
country watching on T .V ., enjoying
every minute on prime time.
The game was a trip into basket
ball fantasy, nip and tuck all the
way. One team up and then the
other; neither team giving the other
one inch o f space. No intimidations,
ju st tw o greats o f the basketball
w orld trying to win the G olden
prize.
W e had touted G eorgetow n all
year. John Thompson had recruited
7-foot Patrick Ewing from Boston
to join his four seniors from the bas
ketball wars. This was all George
town needed to get to the finals— a
skyscraper in the middle to control
the tempo and How of the game.
North Carolina, a team with great
players year in and year out: with a
coach known to have one o f the
greatest minds in the game, going
into the season as favorites to win
the A .C .C . Dean Smith had James
Worthy and Sam Perkins from last
year’s front line. Only All-American
A l W ood was missing. He added a
few freshmen to his roster and away
the season started.
A t season’s end N orth C arolina
had two defeats, Georgetown six.
Both teams started the to u rn a
ment favored to win their regionals
and get to the final four. And then
there were just two teams le ft— the
way the T .V . executives wanted it.
Georgetown and North Carolina for
the championship.
The game was spectacular all the
way and now it was down to 15 sec
onds left. Georgetown with the ball;
the score 63-62 in North C arolina’s
favor. Everyone in the country wait
ing for the ball to be thrown to that
big giant so he could throw it down.
As the seconds slipped by, the world
waited for that special m ovietim e
ending. But no! It was not to be.
N o rth C a ro lin a ’ s James W o rth y
had the ball. How did that happen?
The game was o ver— N o rth C a ro
lina won. Long live the King, long
live N orth C arolina, champions o f
ill college ball.
A nd then there was o n e— a
worthy one at that.
The N o rth C a ro lin a Tarheels
ranked number one in the pre-sea
son and ranked number one in the
post-season, proved to be just that
in conquering the G eorgetow n
Hoyas in a 63-62 thriller. A ll along
this writer felt that the presence o f
both Sam Perkins and James
W orthy would be too much for the
awesom freshm an Pat E w ing.
W orthy showed the world that as a
6-9 ju n io r h e’s p ro b ab ly the best
strong forward, professional or col
lege, playing the game today. Sure
the Hoyas were favored by a mere
two points, and th a t’ s hard to be
lieve when you consider Dean Smith
having his best record ever, 32-2 at
North Carolina. Also, remembering
that his team (N C ) had to play in the
always tough A C C where a breather
is as hard to find as an elusive a rte
sian.

at A A A level will be most essential
to his career.

Georgetown, losing only a ll-A m
erican “ Sleepy” Floyd, will be back
and N o rth C a ro lin a , losing only
senior guard Jim m y Black, should
again emerge as the A C C champion.
And, while this writer picked the
A C C champions to win it a l l . . .still
I would have to wonder what would
have happened i f the sensational
young Ewing had not tried to reject
everything thrown up.
Ewing was called fo r five g o al
tending calls, and you don’t have to
be a m ath em atician to fig u re out
that’s 10 big points.
Our salute goes out to coach John
Thom pson, who exhibited such
great poise throughout the tourna
ment. T h e 4 0 -y e a r-o ld Thom pson
made q uite an im pression fo r his
great sideline coaching.
This was a very good, w ell-
coached H oya team and i f not for
that crucial turnover, with 15 ticks
left on the clock, Georgetown could
very well have been the ones cele
brating instead o f the Tarheels.
