The Classic Styles of Clifford
L IN D A CLIFFO R D
Linda C lifford combines the classic styles of beauty, style and personality
outstanding talent and versatility, and the result has brought her recogni
tion as one o f today’ s top vocalists.
Acclaimed for her unique voice, Linda has achieved still another musical
accomplishment with her new album. I ’l l Keep On Loving You (January
1982). Featuring four tunes produced by Leo Graham and five by Michael
9ore, the LP is another power-packed collection o; high-energy music de
livered by a sensational singer. However, the album works on a more subtle
level than Linda's previous efforts, relying on the dynamics o f her supple
voice rather than its sheer intensity.
"T h is album definitely has more variety,” says Linda. " I t gives me a
chance to do some different things. I like to give people what they want, but
this album does allow me to do other things than what everybody has come
to expect.”
One thing her public has come to expect, which Linda maintains on I ’ll
Keep On Loving You, is consistent quality. She has been a fixture atop the
dance music charts since she burst on the recording scene and her last LP,
I'm Yours, contained two No. 1 dance records—"Shoot Your Best Shot”
and "Red Light,” which was co-written and co-produced by Gore for the
soundtrack o f the popular film “ Fame.”
I ' i i Keep On Loving You has the strong rhythm ic foundation to once
again dominate the dance charts, but is spiced with enough different ingre
dients to appeal to all listeners. " N o matter what happens with all the
changes in music,” says Linda, “ people arc always going to dance. So I sing
dance numbers. But I also love to sing other things, including R&B, pop.
jaz2, and you can hear all those influences on the new album.”
Linda is so versatile, in fact, that she can sing in Five different languages.
While she continues to grow as an impressive performer, a great deal o f

Ax Joins Norman Leyden
Pianist Emanuel Ax will join Associate Conductor Norman Leyden and
the Oregon Symphony Orchestra in classical concerts Sunday, A pril 4 at
7:30 pm and Monday and Tuesday, A pril 5 and 6 at 8:30 pm in the Portland
Civic Auditorium.
Ax will solo in Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 in A. Leyden, best known as
the Oregon Symphony Orchestra’s pops conductor, w ill also lead the or
chestra in Bridge s The Sea, Mendelssohn's The Fair Melusine Overture and
Schumann's Symphony No. 4 in D minor.
Ax, a renowned pianist at 29, has captured more than his share o f prizes
in his career. In addition to winning the First Rubenstein International Pi
ano Competition in 1974, he has won the coveted Michael’s Award, and
prizes in Warsaw 's Chopin, Belgium’s Queen Elizabeth and Lisbon’s Vian-
na de Motta competitions. His most recent triumph was his designation as
the 1979 winner o f the Avery Fisher Prize.
But in many respects Emanuel Ax is not a typical prizewinner. His pian-
ism has been likened to poetry. “ Mr. Ax is a pianist with technique to burn
the kind o f player who never loses his tone or his range o f aural colors in
even the most rapid and rhetorical o f passages,” reported the New York
Times following a recital at New York’s Alice Tully Hall. The New York
Post concurred: “ Emanuel Ax is a pianist blessed with such unfailing ele
gance and good taste that one often takes for granted his sterling tech
nique.”

PERFORMANCES
Linda’s diversity is the result o f early musical exposure. She was raised in
Brooklyn. N.Y., and was encouraged to enter the show business world by a
mother who was "a terrific singer.”
As a very successful child actress, Linda appeared on many popular tele
vision programs. She was also enrolled in dancing school (" T o give me
some grace because I was so clumsy," she blushes) and studied for several
years. By the time she turned 17 she won the Miss New York State competi
tion.
That summer Linda left New York for Chicago to try her hand at a pro
fessional singing career with a 10-piece band. “ The times were very rough.”
she recalls. “ We had 14 people in a three bedroom apartment and the situa
tion was so bad that everyone was writing their names on their own eggs.”
Eventually the group threw in the towel and returned to New York, but
Linda decided to remain and sing in local clubs with a three-piece backup.
S.ie was spotted by a talent scout for Gemigo Records and was signed to a
recording contract in 1977.
Her debut LP, Linda, included a national chart single, "L o n g , Long
Winter, which led to a pact with Curtom Records. Linda’s second album,
/ / M y Friends Could See Me Now, brought her to the top and established
her as a m ajor artist. Two singles from the album —the title track and
“ Runaway Love” —earned her recognition as the top female R&B vocalist
in a number o f 1978 year-end awards.
From there Linda had a succession o f successful platters, including the
two-record Let Me Be Your Woman set, the appropriately-titled The Right
Combination with Curtis Mayfield, and then Here's M y Love, before she
joined Capitol in December 1980.
Her new '7 7 / Keep On Loving You album demands the talents o f a sensa
tional singer and Linda rises to the occasion splendidly, making each num
ber all the more exciting. Five o f the tunes were recorded by Gore in New
York City backed by a rock band comprised o f ace session musicians and
topped with vocal arrangements by Luther Vandross, while the other four
tracks were completed in Chicago by Leo Graham with the thick accompan
iment o f strings and lush background vocals.
Linda, who recently taped the theme song for a television pilot called
"The Chicago Story,” is currently biding her time mothering her 16-month-
old daughter, Gina.
