Page 16 Portland Observer, March 11,1982 Sport Talk by Ron Sykes, Sports Editor The Marshall Minutemaids cap tured their second straight class A A A girls basketball championship by downing Jackson 49-42. Marshall was led by their 6-4, all- state center, Jennifer Freeman, who scored a game-high 24 points. M arshall won the A A A cham pionship last year behind the super e ffo rts o f Tina B lair, who now wears the Orange and Black of Ore gon State. Give Kudos to M arshall Coach Ken Trapp who gave instructions to his team to go to their strength, Freeman, down low and she took advantage by scoring all 24 o f her points from point-blank range. Marshall Coach Jim MacDicken fo r some strange reason chose to leave his best defensive player, Lisa Channel, out front on defense. Thus nullifying both her rebounding and defense inside, where it was so badly needed. He fin ally switched Channel in side with less than two minutes re maining in the game, but oy then the contest had already been decided. Throughout the season Lisa Channel was a dominant force on both offense and defense fo r the lady Raiders. Had she been em ployed inside on defense the Raiders not the Minutemaids would be the 1982 Champions. Lisa Channel, a truly fine player, led Jackson with 22 points all from the field. Lisa Channel scored all her team’s field goals except five. Vickie Channel, L isa ’ s sopho more sister, managed just six points. She had zero field goals and was 6 for 10 from the field.
