Portlander Eric C. Robertson has
written a practical guide on how to
extend your car's life. Called “ C ar
Life Extender," this 94-page book­
let advises a step-by-step preventive
maintenance program . For exam ­
ple, when your car needs a tune-up,
you can check out pages 90 and 91,
entitled, “ The 29 Basic Steps to a
T u n e-u p Service” and determ ine
just how much service you need.
Then, pages 30 and 31 will give you
the questions to ask the mechanic:
“ D o you take a cylinder compres­
sion test and check the cylinder bal­
ance” or “ do you inspect the p ri­
mary and secondary ignition circuit
components for their condition and
for proper operation” or “ do you
inspect for vacuum leaks?” Then,
based on this inform ation, you can
make your decision.
Robertson, an experienced, certi­
fied mechanic, said that other
manuals with record forms included
have not really lent themselves to
proper record-keeping. His manual
which fits in to a glove c o m p a rt­
m ent, allows a car owner to keep
records for five years.
