Maggie Lena Walker (1867-1934)
Born into poverty in Richmond, Virginia, she be
came executive secretary-treasurer of the Indepen
dent Order of St. Luke in 1889, and founded the St.
Luke Penny Savings Bank in 1902. Later she served
as Virginia state president of the National Associa
tion of Colored W om en, and established a news
paper, the St. Luke Herald. In 1924 she spurred an
inter-racial group of wom en to develop an active
community center in Richmond, Virginia.
