A pproxim a tely 10,000 slaves a year were taken fro m the
Gold Coast in the late 18th Century.
Slaves were taken to the United States to work in the fields.
Others were taken to the Caribbean where Yankee traders sold
them for rum to finance the growth o f industry in the north.

Harriet Tubman
Though unable to read or write, Harriet Tubman
was described as "strong as a man, brave as a lion,
cunning as a fox". The "Black Moses",she was the
leading conductor on the Underground Railroad
that guided slaves north to freedom. She made 19
trips to the South and freed some 300 slaves.
