F re d e ric k D o uglass was the le a d in g
spokesman durin g slavery and Reconstruc­
tion. B orn a slave, he escaped to the north
where he jo in e d the a b o litio n m ovem ent,
speaking in the U n ite d States and in Eng­
land. He was a strong advocate o f equality
fo r Blacks in the political, economic, social,
and educational areas. Throughout his long
life he never ceased w ritin g and speaking on
behalf o f equal rights fo r all citizens.

W ar has been, almost w ith o u t exception, a part o f m an’ s cul­
ture in the most prim itive o f tribes and the most highly developed
modern nations. For over 300 years the Black soldier has fought
on the fro n t lines o f this n atio n’ s wars. They have been a part o f
the m ilita ry fro m the A m erican R evolution to the m ore recent
wars lik e Vietnam . Black soldiers helped free slaves d u rin g the
C iv il W ar and Black men have long proven that given a chance,
they can operate even the most complicated planes and missiles in
use by the armed forces.
Never co m p le te ly accepted by his com rades in arm s o r his
white neighbors at home, the Black soldier has w illin g ly and re­
peatedly o ffe re d h im se lf and his life fo r the A m erican dream .
This history o f the Black soldiers and sailors is carved deep in the
h is to ry o f the A m e rica n R e p u b lic— w hich lives today because
many Black men marched o f f to their graves in the name o f A m ­
erica.
Black soldiers fought bravely in the Civil War.
Booker T. W ashington is remembered by
many as a shrewd, calculating judge o f peo­
ple. He had the soft speech and the accom­
m odating manner that made him equally at
hom e am o n g sh a re cro p p e rs and at the
President’ s table.
W ashington firs t gained w ide a tte n tio n
by a speech at the A tla n ta E x p o s itio n in
1895. O n that occasion W ashington urged
m em bers o f his race to “ cast d o w n th e ir
buckets’ ’ among the frie n d ly w hite South­
ern people and to share the com m on p u r­
pose o f raising the S outh’ s economic level.
He o ffe re d the w h ite S o u th a p ea cefu l
reservoir o f Black labor fo r the burgeoning
southern industries.
“ One patient cured by a Negro doctor, one sermon
well preached, one office well filled, one life cleanly
lived—these will tell more in our favor than all the
abstract eloquence that can be summoned to plead
our cause.
