    Health careers are still the most respected, challeng­
ing and rewarding goals that you might choose. The
duties are beyond the traditional doctor and nurse, yet
these two are the mainstay and catalyst o f the medical
careers. A t Providence they are fused together in the
steps that one might have to climb in a career in this in­
dustry.
Ms. Janice M . Foster is an employee relations repre­
sentative. “ The concept o f employee-relations is that
you are attempting to have satisfied employees.. .in or-

der to feel that their needs are being met. They come to
me when there is a c o m p laint." The main outcry is be­
ing scheduled unfairly. “ A hospital is a 24-hour, 7-day-
a-week operation. Somebody has to work at night and
on the w e e k e n d s ." M s. F oster's ed u c a tio n a l b ack­
ground was nursing. " I started out at M t. Hood and re­
ceived training for an L P N . I went up the nursing career
ladder and after four years I decided that I wanted to do
something els e ." This something else led M s. Foster
toward her present position.
Lavelle J. Jackson is a Research Chemist. " W e deal
with the science o f suspended particles in blood. Your
blood is always under stress because your heart pumps it
for circulation. We work under those same systems out­
side o f the body. This way we can check on various
stages o f disease by the way blood reacts." M r. Jackson
has spent over 20 years in this profession. " W h e n my
m o th er died I knew th at science had not gone far
enough to prevent her d eath . So I w anted to be in ­
vo lv e d ." His career started in the medical corp in the
Navy. "S o , l*m doing what I know and I think I know
what I ’m doing." Jackson has published various techni­

cal papers on the subject o f blood. He recommends this
branch o f medicine to those interested in the medical ca­
reers.
You can never stop saying too much about a nursing
career. Shirley Nicholas is Assistant Head Nurse for the
gynocology floo r at Providence. “ I ’ m responsible for
the unit when the Head Nurse is o ff the floor. We give
total care to our patients which includes bedside care as
well as keeping the com m unications lines open w ith
other s ta ff." Ms. Nicholas was attracted to nursing be­
cause she likes helping people. She says that nurses are
the backbone o f every hospital, the circulatory system
o f Providence.
