The industry o f food merchandising is hungry fo r those wanting op

To meet the needs o f their customers as well as to fu lfill the profes
sional goals established by the company. Safeway trains employees at
Larry Warren and Patricia Jackson are in Safcway’ s Store Manage
ment Trainee Program . W arren says the program is a course that in
cludes all departm ents fro m meat to bakery. “ They even give you a
course in ch e ckin g .’ ’ W arren has w orn the Safeway name fo r fo u r
years. Ms. Jackson has been w ith the company fo r six years, starting
at the check stand. “ I ’ ve learned what it takes to get the jo b done in
the right am ount o f tim e. You see, saving tim e is very im portant be
cause it saves money. Bakery training was a lot o f fun. We learned to
merchandise the product as well as assist in p ro d u ctio n . In the meat
department, they showed us how to cut and wrap the various types o f
meats.”
What kind o f people is Safeway looking for? “ I f managers can see
people who are energetic and outgoing and w illin g to w o rk, they w ill
recommend you fo r the SM T Program .” W arren says Safeway offers
educational reimbursement fo r courses taken outside the company. “ I
would take them anyway because this is something that I feel would
benefit m e.”
Warren and Jackson a rr attracted to retailing because they like peo
ple. “ I like w o rking w ith people. 1 feel that this is wha, I ’ m best at.
People that I have problems w ith, who are down, upset or have a com
p la in t, a fte r dealing w ith me usually leave w ith a smile. One way or

g school. From there the rest is history. “ I was nominated fo r the
anagement Training Program and was placed in a store and worked
my way up from there.”
T anncr says, “ You have to not only be concerned w ith how many
cans o f beans you can put on the shelves and in what time, but the wel
fare o f the people who put them on the shelves. You have to m otivate
people and manage them in a way to get the w ork done and keep them
nappy. The most im portant thing is to keep the lines o f com m unica
tions open. The thing I like the most is being in co n tro l o f the situa-

lated thus far is a good start. Your experience, combined w ith a desire
to continue learning, is the right attitude fo r them. They provide the
