The Portland Urban League's Career Awareness Program is a
unique partnership within the community of school, business, .
and government leaders meeting with students to share
information on a broad range of career opportunities. Thousands
of Portland school students have had the opportunity to gather
career information on a first hand basis that might not otherwise
have been available.
The Career Awareness Day is designed to provide:
1. An overview of the world of w ork.
2. An idea of skills required for various job categories.
3. Additional information on areas of specific interest.
The first Urban League Career Awareness Day was held in
1974 at the Cascade Campus of Portland Community College.
Several hundred students, teachers, and representatives from
business, education and government braved freezing weather to
meet and exchange information on career preparation and
opportunities.
The Career Awareness Day was moved in 1975 to the campus
of the University of Portland, where it has been held annually
since that data.
