Auto Insurance: Deductibles
Remember the story about the
man who fell o ff the Em pire State
Building? As he flashed past the
twenty-second floor, he caught the
eye o f a h o rrifie d o n lo o ker,
shrugged and called out, “ So far, so
good!”
As T o m Belcher, a d irecto r o f
personal insurance at Aetna Life &
Casualty, sees it, that attitude isn’t
so far d iffe re n t fro m the view
adopted by an increasing number o f
drivers who go without automobile
insurance (sometimes in violation o f
state law). " In the 1980s. the risk o f
enormous liability obligations sim
ply can’t be ignored,” Belcher said.
“ A n d even replacing a vehicle or

circumstances.”
One o f the most com m on ways
for informed consumers to hold the
line on auto insurance bills is to
raise their deductibles— that is, the
cost o f comprehensive or collision
damage that the policy-holder pays,
i f an accident occurs, before insur
ance takes over. D eductibles
make it possible fo r insurance
companies to avoid processing
smaller claims, so the higher the de
ductibles chosen, the lower the pre
mium will be.
In the past, the most popular de
ductible for collision coverage has
been $100 w ith no deductible for
comprehensive coverage (protecting
against th e ft, storm damage,
vandalism and other non-collision
perils that result in damage to the
car).
Although there is a trend toward
higher deductibles, the pattern has
not kept pace with either inflation
or increases in average fam ily in
come. In 1967 for example, the av
erage value o f a new, U .S .-m a n u
factured car was $ 3,3 10 — and the
standard $100 deductible was about
3 per cent o f that. By 1980, the aver
age price of a new U.S.-built car was
$7,880— and a $100 deductible was
1.3 per cent o f that value.
‘ ‘ Probably the important thing to
remember,” Belcher suggested, "is
that for collision coverage, choosing
a $200 deductible instead o f a $100
deductible would mean a savings for
the average consumer o f about 14
per cent o f the collision premium. A
$500 deductible instead o f $100
would result in a 45 per cent reduc
tio n in the prem ium for collision
coverage.”
As for comprehensive coverage, a
$50 deductible rather than full cov
erage will save about 20 per cent on
comprehensive premiums. Choosing
a $100 deductible w ill result in an
average savings o f about 30 per
cent.
Considering higher deductibles is
especially ap p ro p ria te i f you are
among those policyholders who pay
the cost o f repairs themselves in a
minor accident. “ Countrywide, re
search has shown that about 27 per
cent o f licensed drivers say that they
or someone w ith whom they have
had an accident decided not to file a
small claim. These persons should
definitely have high deductibles and
the lower premiums that go w ith
them,” Belcher suggested.
Premium saving notwithstanding,
Belcher warned, one’s willingness to
choose a higher deductible should
also be based on the consumer's es
tim ate o f the likelihood that he or
she will have an accident. When an
accident occurs, the policyholder
will absorb the cost o f the deducti
ble out-of-pocket.
At Aetna, the nation's fifth larg
est automobile insurer, statistics in
dicate that about 50 per cent o f au
tomobile policyholders will be acci-
dent-free after eight year*. For some
individuals, o f course, the odds are
less fav o rab le and fo r others,
th e y 're m ore fav o rab le than the
Belcher tuggeited. “ The potential
savings and the importance o f get-
tin s adequate pro tectio n m ake it
weu worthwhile to talk with an inde
overall average.

natives, consumers should take the
