M r. Baldwin’s ideas were based upon H O N E S T Y , S IM P L IC IT Y , and H A R D W O R K
and on this base he built B A L D W IN ’S S A N IT A T IO N , IN C .
The point I wish to make is that I believe that most young men and women living today
have a better opportunity than those who were born during the time M r. Baldwin was born,
and further, most young people living today have access to more money and freedom, than
those back when M r. Baldwin was born. I dare to say that more young people were more
constructive, back when M r. Baldwin was born; and today it seems that more young people
are more destructive and disruptive than constructive. It also appears that more young
people are less Honest and more complicated, confused and downright lazy, than they were
about forty years ago. I think N E E D was a motivating factor back then, and now W A N T is
the motivating factor. N E E D brings out H O N E S T Y , S IM P L IC IT Y and H A R D P R O D U C
T IV E W O R K . W A N T is very superficial and only brings out S H U C K IN O A N D J IV IN G

Walking the streets doped up and carrying a five pound Japanese tape-deck blaring sounds
o f disruption is clearly a sight o f " T H E M IR A G E S Y N D R O M E ” demonstrating wasting
non-productive minds.
How much better it would be if these young people would hustle up the same amount o f
money that they give to the dope man and spend on material short lived foolishness; and de
velop their own business on a firm base o f H O N E S T Y . S IM P L IC IT Y A N D H A R D W O R K .
That was exactly what George H . Baldwin did. I think his example is living proof that you
can be B L A C K , P O O R and live in P o rtla n d , Oregon; and yet be C O N S T R U C T IV E ,
H O N E S T and most o f ail be respected as a successful businessman.
Let’s keep George H . Baldwin’s spirit alive in our young people, and in our business trans
actions. For only men with principles o f Honesty, Simplicity and Hard W ork will be an asset
to our Community.
