New Diesel Engine in 1982 Trucks
A new 6.2 liter V8 diesel engine
for Chevrolet light-duty Pickups,
Suburbans, Blazers and forw ard-
con tro l chassis w ill be o ffe red in
1982 models.
“ The new engine— developed by
Chevrolet specifically for C M truck
use— is designed to deliver the
pulling power typically associated
with comparable-size gasoline en
gines and the fuel economy and ser
vice life inherent in the diesel con
cept,” said Robert D. Lund, Chev
rolet general manager and a General
Motors vice president.
" T h is is a heavy-duty diesel en
gine,” Lund added. " It will provide
our customers with the power and
load-hauling capability o f Chevro
let’ s gasoline-powered trucks with
the diesel's traditional fuel economy
advantage. The engine is ideal for
city delivery, stop-and-go work with
considerable idle tim e , extended
highway driving, and trailering o f
up to 13,500 pounds."
E P A estimates— in different ap
plications— rate the engine from 18
miles per gallon city to 3 1 highway.
The diesel is built at Chevrolet’s
new M o rain e , O hio engine plant,
where microwave technology is in
corporated for the first time in the
ignition timing procedure o f every
diesel engine produced.
The procedure assures unmatched
precision and consistency o f the
combustion process and helps the
engine meet stringent federal as well
as California emissions regulations.
The engine features a Stanadyne
m echanical fuel injectio n system
with Bosch pintle-type injector noz
zles and a Ricardo-type precombus
tion chamber.
Seventeen bolds (five per bore) se
cure the cylinder heads.
A fast-actio n glow plug and a
block heater are standard equip
ment.
Oil and filter changes are required
each 3,000 miles for engines in ve
hicles o f less than 8500 gross vehicle
weight (G V W ). or each 3,000 miles
for heavier-duty applications. Other
essential m aintenance is s ig n ifi
cantly reduced since there are no
spark plugs, ignition wires, distribu
tor points, condenser, coil or carbu
retor adjustments.
The bright red engine with its dis
tinctive barrel-shaped air intake is
available in:
• A ll two and fou r-w h eel drive
one-half, three-quarter and one-ton
pickups.
•A ll Suburbans
•A ll one-ton chassis cabs
•Four-wheel drive Blazers.
Later in the 1982 model year, the
engine will be available in step vans,
and both com m ercial and m otor
home chassis.
The engine is one o f four d iffe r
ent diesels available in 1982 model
Chevrolet trucks.
