lative action.
In a meeting last week, the board
e s ta b lish e d the b o u n d a rie s o f the
zones and assigned board members
to the zones.
In previous years, the seven board
members o f the regional education
agency were elected a t-la rg e fro m
the d is t r ic t, w h ic h encom passes
M ultnom ah C ou nty, a small p ortion
o f W ashington C o u n ty and an area
o f Clackamas C ou nty in the Damas­
cus-Boring area.
The ESD is now divided in to five
zones w ith tw o board members con­
tin u in g a t-la rg e . M u ltn o m a h was
the o n ly ESD in the state th a t was
n o t zoned b e fo re the le g is la tiv e
change.
C rite ria fo r establishing the zones
included m aking them equal in pop­
u la tio n and to c o n fo rm w ith school
d is tr ic t b o u n d a rie s and p re c in c t
lines wherever possible. Since zoned
board members must live in the zone
they represent, current board m em ­
bers’ positions were tied to the zone
they live in. In tw o zones, there were
tw o b o a rd m em bers in the same

was assigned to the zone and one as­
signed to the at-large position.
