Somewhere in the pre-dawn dark
ness o f 1974, W illiam Taylor, Jr. o f
P o rtla n d crawled around on his
hands and knees grappling at the
opponent opposite him on the wres
tling mat. And there in the dinginess
o f the Peninsula Park gym , un
know n to anyone, a w orld cham
pion was born.
Bill Taylor, J r., representing the
West in the N ational Sports Festi
val, brought home a gold medal in
G reco-Rom an wrestling. The N a
tional Sports Festival brought to
gether the finest athletes throughout
America. The nation was split into
four divisions: East, West, N orth
and South.
Young Taylor got his start under
Roy P ittm an, o f Peninsula Park.
After winning every tournament he
entered his parents felt that it was
time for Bill to move on to a bigger
calibre and a chance for their son to
advance his skill level.
“ Pittman is a fine coach ," said
Bill T aylor, S r., " b u t our son was
moving so fast that we felt he should
have a chance to train in a better fa
cility.”
So it was on to the Oregon Athlet
ic Association where Bill, Jr. trained
under M a rk Sprague, recognized
n atio n ally fo r producing ju n io r
w orld cham pions. Young B ill's
wrestling career has taken him to
such places as Nebraska, New York,
C o lo ra d o , and O k la h o m a locally
and as far away as Sweden and Den
m ark. And it has also taken away
some $8.000 annually from the fam
ily income.
Bill and Marney Taylor are dedi
cated to their son’s career and have
opened their purse strings so that he
may compete. " O u r next g o a l,"
said his M om , "is to see Bill gradu
ate from college with a really good
degree.”
At the pace young Taylor is mov
ing he should actually be pursued by
more than a few good colleges.

It is not by accident that B ill
chose wrestling, and it was not an
easy decision. Bill was outstanding
in both fo o tb a ll, where he played
quarterback, and baseball where he
was all around. His fam ily decided
that he would drop two to become
good in one. T h e y , as a fa m ily ,
worked for their son: he hasn’t let
them down. The Taylors have two
other sons, A n dre and J .D ., who
also are ju n io r cham pions. J .D .
won the Oregon State 8-and-under
championship.
"1 stopped him there," said Bill,
Sr. " I just didn’t want to push him
too early.
The Bill Taylors are a special fam
ily, and one o f which all Portlanders
should be proud.

The National Sports Festival was
only his most recent champinship.
Others include the prestigious
G ran d N a tio n a l held this year in
Lincoln. Nebraska, There were 126
wrestlers representing 50 states. Bill
won the G old in his division. The
16-year-old Benson ju n io r is a tire
less worker and relentless com peti
tor once in the ring.
Greco-Roman wrestling requires
all upper-body contact— it is illegal
to attack below the waist. It is the
toughest division in wrestling, and
the fact that Taylor excels here is a
tribute to the young man.
