LINDA HORNBUCKLE

Portland's rising star
by Nathaniel Scott
There is a star on the rise in Port-
land: a very beautiful and Black
star. Rising out of the midst of tens
o f thousands with a voice th at’ s
reminiscent o f the culture o f the
American Black: a mixture of many
things.
Linda Hornbuckle, a 26-year-old
native Portlander, the daughter of
Reverend Howard Hornbuckle and
a 1973 graduate o f Grant High
School, is the star in question, and
the singing o f modern-day music
with a gospel twist is the mixture.
She said, “ Now and then 1 like to
go back to church to sing. I t ’s the
source. I t ’s like going back there
and regrouping, pulling it all togeth-
er again.”
Linda is one of the Hornbuckle’s
ten children and like many Ameri-
can Blacks she was raised in a reli-
gious atmosphere, in this instance:
singing in church. “ My sisters and 1
sang in church— we traveled with
my dad, him preaching and us sing-
¡ng,” she said. “ I try to set a mood
by talking with the audience and
judging what they would like to
hear.”
It is a judgment that captivates*
and transports Linda to another di-
mension as she belts, dances and
claps her hands while closing her
