G rassroot News N .W . - The blending together o f d iffe re n t musical styles
has ce rta in ly altered the d ire ctio n o f co n te m p o ra ry fu n k and jazz. These
m usical fo rm s fin d s its e lf d e veloping a m a rke tp la ce v e rs a tility w h ich is
dependent on the im provisations o f the artist involved. In the area o f jazz
fusion, J e ff L o rb e r Fusion, is one P acific N orthw est group that has made
inroads com m ercially and m usically, in to this fie ld on a consistence basis.
Readers p ro b a b ly rem em ber the name J e ff L o rb e r, since it o rig in a lly
developed fro m the J e ff Lorder g roup that played fo r m any years out o f a
lounge in N .E . P o rtland. “ 1 had w orked in the P o rtla n d area w ith a n u m
ber o f m usicians in a lo t o f d iffe re n t contexts. In 1976, I decided to start
and o w n a ba n d . W e had L ester M a c F a rla n d on bass, T e rry L a yn e on
reeds, th e c u rre n t d ru m m e r, D e n n is B r a d fo r d , a lo n g w ith m y s e lf on

and w ife vocal d u o , have a n n o u n ce d plans to pursue in d iv id u a l careers.
M a rily n M cC oo made her solo debut at the Nugget in Sparks, Neveda, w ith
Ben Vereen J u ly 23 fo r one week. H er new show was p ro duced by Lester
W ilson.
B illy D avis J r., is presently in the s tu d io re co rd in g a gospel a lb u m w ith
Reverend James Cleveland. Both M cC oo and Davis have also recently co m
pleted solo recording sessions and are cu rre n tly negotiating in d ivid u a l record
deals. They arc being represented at the W illia m M o rris Agency by N orm an
G o re lic k , J e ff Lorber and D ann y W ilso n.
L o rb e r is well versed in the entire co m position o f music and choose jazz
as a vehicle fo r his talents. “ The most exciting and challenging dire ctio n to
go was in to ja zz. The game is to create m usic th a t’ s c o m m e rc ia lly suc
cessful along w ith being a rtis tic a lly p ro m in e n t."
D enny B ra d fo rd has been w ith J e ff L o rb e r F usion fro m ju m p s tre e t.
B ra d fo rd feels that he adds a level o f rh y th m to the g ro u p , w hich is the
developm ent o f his style o f p la y in g . “ M y style is a n a tu ra l style w hich
developed fro m my playing fo rm a t instead o f an academ ic fo rm a t. I add
o rig in a lity and dynamics to the music as one and this is intergrated in to the
g ro u p as a w h o le .”
The th u m p in g and p lu ckin g o f the bass is provided by D anny W ils o n ,
w ho says the syn h ro n iza tio n o f the bass and drum s gives a com poser like
L o rb e r som ething to structure his keyboards aro u n d . “ We give the solid
groove that can be used to lay any track o n .”
T h e newest e le m e n t o f L o rb e r F u s io n is th e h o rn s e c tio n h a n d le d
m a s te rfu lly by Kenny G o re lic k , along w ith the vocals and g u ita r o f the
m u sicia n h im s e lf, M a rlo n M c C la in . These a d d itio n a l facets o f the J e ff
’ o rb e r Fusion plays a dom inate force w hile creating another dim enision o f
F u sio n m usic. T h is o b se rva tio n became a fa ct in the concert given last
Sunday at the C ivic A u d ito riu m . The horn solos o f G orelick commended
the standing o va tio n o f the audience, and the magic o f M a rlo n funked the
music as well as the audience.
L o r b e r ’ m a tu ra tio n o ccured under and a ro u n d m any o f the best o f
P o rtla n d ’ s local jazz musicians. T hara M em ory, Lester M acF arland, Ron
Steen and T o m G ra n t. When does the o rig in a l L o rb e r tunes come in and
n o t ju s t the re fle ctio n o f the talents in the area? " I n m y earlier tunes, it
was m ore dei i /ative than the music I ’ m w ritin g now. I w rote a few songs in
the vein o f C huck and H erbie. Y ou can also hear those influences m ore
re a d ily in m y m usic d u rin g those tim es. C u rre n tly , the base o f m y c o m
positions w ill be a bit more involved than th a t,” L o rber explained.

M c C o o and D avis were o rig in a l members o f the F ifth D im ension, one o f
the to p vocal groups o f the 1960s and early 1970s. They were m arried in 1969
well.
T hey were aw arded the G rand Prize at the T oyko A n n u a l M usic Festival
and hosted the " M a rily n M cC oo and B illy D avis Jr. S h o w " on C BS.
" I ' m very excited about go in g on m y ow n and I tn also a little scared,
said M a rily n . " B il ly and I had talked about it at great length We feel that
our m arriage is very secure and that by p e rfo rm in g alone, each o f us w ill have
an o p p o rtu n ity to expand o u r range that much m ore.'

and le ft the g roup in 1975.
As a duo M cC oo and Davis reached the top o f the charts w ith " Y o u D o n 't
H ave To Be A S ta r (T o Be In M y Show). " T h e song was ce rtifie d R IA A G o ld
M illio n S eller and earned them th e ir firs t G ra m m y A w a rd in 1977. T h e ir

stylistic approaches to com posing and recording. I looked at the recording

synthesizers, horns, guitars and vocals.”
