Spears joins
Dunk Kings tour
By Nyewust Askari
OSU coach brings problems
When
the
to u r
reaches
Philadelphia, U lf w ill find himself
in the city he hopes to one day play
fo r. (He aspires to play w ith the
Philadelphia 76ers). His favorite
players? D a rryl Dawkins o f the
76ers, and Earvin “ M agic” John
son o f the Los Angeles Lakers.
U lf has stated a preference for
playing guard.
The Summer Classic is the only
summer tour schedule designed with
a playing roster o f high school un
derclassmen in m ind. Other
traveling squads lean tow ard the
just graduated senior stars and for
good reason, while the Summer
Classic allows the under recognized
hoopsters o f the Northwest to play
before many o f the Eastern basket
ball writers and coaches who select
most o f the top pre-season high
school A ll-A m erica teams. These
writers often neglect to mention the
great Northwest underclassmen.
The Dunk Kings Summer Classic
Tour eases some o f this dilemma in
terms o f making Northwest athletes
more visible.
The Dunk Kings is a n on-profit
organization but is proud to offer
the Summer Classic Tour to all the
Northwest great underclassmen
prospects. Each participant must
raise $448 to cover to u r costs.
U lf has raised h a lf o f the funds
needed to make the Summer Classic
Tour.
Remember the name, remember
the year, because it is a name you
w ill hear a lot in the coming years.
Maybe it w ill take the playing
abilities o f U lf to bring a champion
ship to Philadelphia. And most
coaches agree that U lf should be
tough fo r the eastern guards to
handle. The Observer w ill have an
update on the Summer Classic
Tour, and a report on U lf’ s perfor
mances.
U lf Spears, 16, o f Portland, has
been named to the 12 man roster o f
the Dunk Kings Summer Classic
T our, July 29 - August 15. The
Dunk Kings will leave Seattle for the
Chicago, Philadelphia, New York
City, Washington, D.C., areas for
19 exhibition basketball games in a
schedule featuring the Dunk Kings
best from the Pacific Northwest
versus the best summer high school
squads in the East.
U lf was a standout sophomore
this past season fo r Benson Tech
State Champions. He is playing on
his second Summer Classic roster
after being named the Most O u t
standing Player of the ‘79 Classic to
Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands
where he led the team to a 7-2
record. An in ju ry prevented him
from playing on the roster of the ‘ 80
Classic, but the upcoming one is an
exact duplicate with even more great
Eastern teams added.
U lf, the oldest o f four children,
and the son o f M attie Spears and
A lbert Shephard, began playing
basketball at the age o f seven.
During his elementary and ju n io r
high days, he played for the Albina
Sports Program coached by Phil
and Carol Walden. Here, he played
the center position, but after being
accepted at Benson, he switched to
playing guard. During his freshman
year, he was chosen to play on the
varsity team; an honor held u n til
then, by Benson NBA great Richard
Washington.
But basketball is not his only
speciality. He holds several state
awards in track and field. In the 13-
14-year-old category, he holds the
national record o f 18’6” in the long
jum p, and until last year, held the
state meet record in the 100 and 200
yard dash.

Thom as’ appearance at the
Junior W o rld Cham pionships is
also expected to cause the can
cellation o f the meets o f a group o f
Oregon high school and college
students touring Canada under the
sponsorship o f the Oregon Coaches
C u ltu ra l Exchange Program , o f
which Thomas is chairm an. Not
only were the Canadian anateur o f
ficia ls insenced at Thom as' ap
pearance in Vancouver, but com-
petion with the Oregon team could
endanger Canada’ s status with the
International Olym pic Committee
which sanctions all in te rn a tio n a l
meets.
Thomas planned to take a group
o f wrestlers from Oregon State
U niversity to South A fric a in
August. Aside from bringing about
the end of the participants’ amateur
careers, the trip could have caused
them to lose their intercollegiate
eligibility because o f an NCAA rule
against summer wrestling. The trip
also could have set o ff an incident
with the potential repercussion o f a
boycott o f the 1984 Olympic Games
to be held in Los Angeles.
The 1976 M ontreal games were
boycotted by A fric a n nations
because the New Zealand rugby
team had played South A frica and
New Zealand was allowed to par
ticipate in the O lym pic Games. A
1984 boycott is already being
threatened because a South African
rugby team has been given per
mission by the U.S. State Depart
ment to tour the U.S.
Tuesday, Thomas announced he
w ould not take the trip because
OSU decided not to request the
N CAA waiver.
Concerts
scheduled
“ H eartbeat” concerts, held in
Pioneer Square each Tuesday and
Thursday noon, w ill feature per
forming groups.
