Gn June 29th the Police Bureau
was called when one youth threw a
knife at another, who was running
away. A third peson was reported to
have a gun. A witness said the police
report that shots had been fired was
incorrect. “ I was surprised that
when the police came they just
walked through the crowd of 200 or
so young people. The crowd was
quiet and began to disperse. I didn’t
see the officers talk to anyone or ask
any questions.” W hile in the park
the officers broke up a fight bet
ween two teenage girls. The

problems for the police, forcing

them to go through the park from
22nd street.
Now that parking has been
removed from the street, the Police
Bureau has received some reports
that park users consider this as a
form o f police harassment against
park users. Although there are some
persons who abuse the park, most
use it for legitimate recreation pur
poses. Many came from outside the
immediate neighborhood to use the
sports facilities and to participate in
organized baseball leagues.
Captain McCabe, North precint,
said the action was in response to
neighbors’ requests to protect their
property and their access to their
own property and also to provide
easier and safer access for other
park users.
