Black volunteers. The B attalion, in ­
te g ra te d fro m the b e g in n in g , was
the firs t non-segregated US m ilita ry
force and, in a d d itio n , this was the
firs t tim e Blacks served as o ffic e rs
over w hite troops.
D u rin g the years before the A B l
w ent to S p a in , the US was in t u r ­
m o il. The Depression to o k a heavy
to ll; this was also a time o f increased
ra cism . B la cks' wages were 30 per
cent less th a n those o f w h ite s and
u n e m p lo y m e n t was d o u b le . F ro m
1929 to 1933, some 150 Blacks were

F ra n c o , fa c is ts fr o m G e rm a n y ,
P o rtu g a l and Ita ly in v a d e d the
country.
By 1937 in te rn a tio n a l brigades o f
a n ti-fa c is t volunteers fro m a ll over
the w o rld a rriv e d in S p a in . The
A b ra h a m L in c o ln B a tta lio n was
assigned to the s o u th e rn fr o n t,
where fighting was fierce. The fro n t
was stabilized and the facists stop­
ped, although they won in the end.
O live r Law was the firs t Black to
c o m m a n d the fir s t in te g ra te d
m ilita ry unit in US h is to ry . F or six
years he has served in a segregated
u n it in the US A rm y and le ft as a
p riv a te , but a fte r six m o n th s in
S pain he became B a tta lio n C o m ­
m a n d e r w ith a ra n k o f C a p ta in .
E sla n d a R obeson (M rs . P a u l
Robeson) wrote:
. . many officers
and men here in S pain considered
h im the best b a tta lio n co m m a n d er
in S pain.” He was killed in battle in
July o f 1937.
Jim Peck was one o f tw o B lack
p ilo ts in the S panish R e p u b lic a n
A rm y . In spite o f tw o years at the
U n iv e rs ity o f P itts b u rg and a va lid
p ilo t’ s lisence, Peck was rejected by
the US A ir C o rp and the N a v y .
When the Spanish C iv il W ar began
he w ent to S p a in , w here he flew
S o vie t made planes and p la ye d a
prom inent part in the air war.

tist.
D r. A rn o ld D o n o w a , a graduate
o f H a rv a rd , served w ith the
Am erican Medical Bureau in Spain.
He became head o f O ra l S u rg e ry .
R eturning to the US he continued to
care fo r fa c ia l w o u n d s u n til his
retirem ent.
A m ong the visitors to the A L B in
Spain was Paul Robeson. “ I went to
Spain in 1938 and that was a tu rn in g
p o in t in my life . There I saw that it
was the w o rk in g men and women o f
S p a in w h o w ere h e ro ic a lly g iv in g
‘ th e ir last fu ll measure o f d e v o tio n ’
to the cause o f d e m o c ra c y in th a t
b lo o d y c o n flic t, and th a t it was the
u p per classes - the landed g e n try ,
the bankers and industrialists -- who
had u n le a sh e d th e fa c is t beast
against their own people . . . A new,
w arm fe llin g fo r m y hom eland grew
w ith in me as 1 met the young men o f
A b ra h a m L in c o ln B a tta lio n -- the

A m ericans w h o had crossed the sea
to fig h t and die that another govern­

In the fa ll o f 1938, at a conference
h e ld in S w itz e r la n d , th e B ritis h
governm ent proposed that the arms
em bargo on a ll belligerents in Spain
be lifte d i f all “ volunteers” on both
sides were w ith d ra w n B o th sides
accepted and the in te rn a tio n a l b a t­
ta lio n s were sent hom e. Franco did
n o t keep th e a g re e m e n t, and th e
7,000 mem ber Nazi C o n d o r Legion
and 60,000 Ita lia n tro o p s rem ained
in Spain. When the C iv il W ar fin a lly
came to an end in A p r il o f 1939, it
w ould be only a m a tte r o f tim e u n til
th e s o -c a lle d n e u tra ls -- th e U S,
B r itia n and F ra n c e -- w o u ld be
fig h tin g fo r th e ir liv e s a g a in st the
sam e fa c is t fo rc e s th a t th e y had
allow ed to conquer Spain.

In an interview w ith the Observer,
Boyer said he w o u ld appreciate the
attendance and su p p o rt o f any and
all com m unity residents. “ This case
is im p o rta n t f o r a n u m b e r o f
re a so n s,” he said. " I t ' s a ll a b o u t
being able to not allow frustrations,
pressures and the lik e , to p re ve n t
you fro m fo llo w in g through on any
case. I encountered a lo t o f pressure
these last six years. O rig in a lly , there
were 13 o f us involved w ith the case.
