Loren M Clark, Executive Vice President of W illam ette Savings,
the Oregon division of American Savings of Salt Lake, has announced
the appointment of Richard Forde as W illam ette's residential loan
representative in N orth and N ortheast Portland. M r. Forde w ill
operate from the Walnut Park Office of Willamette Savings, and will
work closely with real estate agents through the northern portion of
Portland in securing financing for home buyers.

For teenagers, the jobless rate fo r

least 35 m illio n people in the U nited
S tates have h ig h b lo o d pre ssu re .
O ne in every 6 A m e rica n s has high
b lo o d p ressure, and 5O®/o o f these
people d o n ’ t know it. Because there
are no o b se rva b le sy m p to m s , h igh
b lo o d pressure is called “ the silent
k i l l e r . " U n c o n tro lle d h igh b lo o d
p re ssu re can e v e n tu a lly re s u lt in
d is a b ility and death fro m heart a t­
tack, stroke and kidney failure.
B lo o d p re ssu re is th e fo rc e o r
p re ssu re o f the b lo o d a g a in s t the
w a lls o f the a rte rie s . T h is fo rc e is
generated by the heart as it beats.
T he a rte rie s are the b lo o d vessels
th ro u g h w h ic h b lo o d flo w s to a ll
parts o f the b o d y. The w alls o f the
a rte rie s are e la s tic and m u s c u la r;
th e y s tre tc h and c o n tr a c t to ta k e
th e ups and d o w n s o t b lo o d
pressure. Each tim e the heart c o n ­
tracts, o r pum ps, b lo o d pressure in
a rte rie s goes up each tim e the
heart relaxes between beats, b lo o d
p re ssu re goes d o w n . So fo r each
person there is an upper o r systolic
and a lo w e r o r d ia s to lic b lo o d
pressure w h ic h is m easured d u rin g
exam ination.

cising o r excited, blood pressure can

A n y o n e can have h ig h b lo o d
pressure (even c h ild re n ), but those
w h o a re e s p e c ia lly h ig h ris k are
people w ho are o ve rw e ig h t, have a
fa m ily h is to ry o f h ig h b lo o d
p re ssu re are o ld e r th a n 50 years,
a n d /o r B lack. H igh b lo o d pressure
is the num ber one cause o f death in
Black Americans.
Because th e re are ra re ly any
sym ptons, testing is the only way to
te ll i f a p e rso n has h ig h b lo o d
pressure. It is a sim ple, painless, low
cost procedure that o n ly takes a few
m in u te s . A lth o u g h h ig h b lo o d
pressure cannot be cured, it can be

dow n and it w ill also make the heart
stro n g e r. Exercise can also relieve
tension and prom ote relaxation.

disease. Strokes are at least 8 times
m o re p re v e le n t in s m o k e rs th a n
non-smokers.

Everyone should have their blood
pressure checked once a year. Black
