Grassroot New». N W. - Recently, Portland was honored with the presence
of Pharoah Sanders, distinguished saxophone player and jazz pioneer. With
awe, Pharoah was capulated from relative obscurity to world wide recogni
tion as John Coltrane’ s right hand sax player. Many expected Pharoah to
continue in the "Trane” tradition, but instead, he developed his own sound
with powerful, robust tones, an incredible range and a softness o f ballads
which is evidence o f his talents; a creator of original sounds.

M astero Thara M em ory prepares to wave his magic wand during
M ay 2nd T IM E S O U N D concert at Civic A u d ito riu m . His was an
historical event that will always be remembered by Black Portland
ers.
His musicanship has manifested itself in a variety o f ways. One is his in
fluence on a number o f artists that include Norman Connors and Stanley
Clarke. In 1978, Pharoah recorded a production for Norman Connors which
fused together such notable talents as Phyllis Hyman on vocals; David T.
Walker, guitar; and the impressive Lenny White on drums. Only an energy
like Sanders could have utilized all o f this talent, to have these same artists,
later on, utilize the direction and energy given by Pharoah.

Ask Aunt Bea
Dear Aunt Bea:
My neighbor has two grown
children in their mid to late twen
ties. The older o f the two (her
daughter) lives at mom’ s part time
as she roams with a friend and the
younger (son) lives at home fu ll
time. They both seem to take advan
tage o f their m other’ s generosity
just because they are family.
She complains often but doesn’ t
know what to do about it. I
suggested she ask them both to
move permanetly and only come to
visit. Do you think I was wrong?
A Neighbor
Dear Neighbor:
I agree they’re both old enough to
be independent o f their mom by
now, but o f course they won’ t be as
long as she lets them depend on her
hospitality.
Aunt Heu
Dear Aunt Bea:
Some time ago I read o f an
avacodo honey mask that was very
soothing to the face and tightening
somewhat to any sag that may be
coming on, but I ’ ve lost the article
and can’ t remember the recipe. Can
you help?

Blend together in blender or whip

PHAROAH SANDERS
STARS * * * * * * *
INYOUREYES
It was easy for Sanders to predict that the basic bass beat would take hold
among.the young generation. One might say it was his improvising on sax
which inspired others to try to keep up and apply his unique rhythms which
we find today in the Funk category.
In an interview with Grassroot News N. M., Sanders said he tries not to go
in the same direction as Jazz but goes where his energy takes him. " I call it
free-flowing energy and my main thing is trying to control it . " His control
over his horn is reflected in the way he improvises.
It is easy to find yourself kicking back and listening to Sanders, as he
moves through different cosmic, rhythmic zones. He is one the last o f those
performers who don’ t use mixers or microphones. " I like natural sounds
with out mikes. Sometimes I have played where the sound has gone out. It
doesn’ t stop me. I just keep on playing.” he said.
The power of Pharoah is demanding serious re-assessment. The scope of
his music reveals with each new album, the height o f his development. He is
moving ahead with patience and the belief in the Creator of A ll. His music
expresses his lifestyle, in sounds rather than words.
