ARTQUAKE WINS NEA GRANT
CIVIC AUDITORIUM
THURSDAY,
ARTQUAKE '81 announced today that the National
Endowment fo r the A rts has awarded the festival a
$2,500 grant. The monies are earmarked to develop
Oregon’ s first major jazz festival which will be presen­
ted as A R T Q U A K E '8 1’ s music program during the
September festival. “ Major local, regional and national
jazz artists w ill be selected to appear through an ap­
plication process,” reports the Executive Producer,
Karen W hitm an. She states that A rt B arfield and
Homer C la rk, Co-chairs o f A R T Q U A K E ’ s music
comm ittee have worked w ith musicians, jazz club
owners and jazz enthusiasts in the process o f preparing
a city-wide jazz program to complement the Festival
which will be on Portland's mall September 11, 12, and
13, 1981. Applications for participation will be released
from the AR TQ U AKE office within three weeks. For

The work for AR TQ U AK E ’ 81 has already begun.
W ith the “ B ill Cosby Live ” event volunteers have
helped address letters and flyers to help sell tickets.
They have distributed posters and will be at the event to
sell ARTQUAKE posters, catalogs and buttons as well
as recruit volunteers. There always seems to be a task
waiting in the wings.
You can be involved too. A ll you need to do is let
ARTQUAKE know that you want to help. A call to the
ARTQUAKE office to offer your name for a volunteer
task w ill help make the Festival happen. Call today.

COSBY LIVE - IN CONCERT

A ll those rum bly rumors are true! B ill Cosby is
coming to Portland for ARTQUAKE. See him live on
May 14 - 7:00 and 10:00 PM at P o rtla n d ’ s C ivic
Auditorium.
Renowned as a comedian, actor, author, philospher,
educator and family man, Cosby is a performer extra­
ordinaire. His comedy albums have sold over 11 million
copies and he is a frequent as well as a popular attract­
ion at Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe. Recognition
o f his acting ability came in three “ Emmy” awards as
best actor when he co-starred with Robert Culp in "Z
Spy. ” His most recent movie. The D e v il and M ax
D evlin, opened in Portland last m onth. Education
is probably Cosby’ s proudest achievement. He has a
bachelor’ s degree from Temple University School o f
C om m unication. The U niversity o f Massachusetts
awarded his masters and doctor o f education in which
he studied ways to meet the educational needs o f
m in o rity children and the growth o f TV as an
educational tool. “ The Cos” originated Fat A lb e rt
shows which won the Children’ s Theater Association
Seal o f Excellence in 1972 and Ohio State University
Aw ard in 1975 fo r m eritorious achievement in
educational Broadcasting.
Married for 18 years. Bill and his wife, Camille, live
a uietly in Am herst, Massachusetts w ith their five
children. There he spends time weaving the stories o f a
childhood spent in a Philadelphia housing project with
vivid insights o f human vulnerability into an easy warm,
open, honest dialogue.

They come from the greater metro area to help make
Portland’s Festival o f the arts, ARTQUAKE. happen.
They number about 1,000. They are hidden in a down­
town office building working at odd hours until the first
weekend after Labor Day when they appear at dusk to
begin constructing ARTQUAKE.
Who are they? Among their number you w ill find a
newcomer to our community, a homemaker, a teenager,
a banker, a politician, a teacher or a retiree. A ll have o f­
fered their time and skills to support the finest N orth­
west artists who have come together fo r a three day
showing o f their talents and their work.

One might wonder why they give so freely, these
volunteers? The answers vary from “ 1 love festivals” to
“ I love Portland and AR TQ U AK E” to “ Its just fun”
and fin a lly to “ I t ’ s the sights and sounds o f people
coming together on the mall downtown. I feel good
here, just soaking it all in.”
We asked Volunteer Coordinator, Kate Marx, what
kinds o f jobs are available. She said, “ We need people
to run errands, type letters, sell AR TQ U AKE buttons
and balloons, set up canopies, install walls, help
children enjoy ARTQUAKE, conduct wheelchair tours,
and a multitude o f other tasks before, during and after
the festival. AR TQ U AKE is a year round project and
I’ ve never failed to find a job for someone who wants to
help.”
LOCAL TALENT SUPPORTS COSBY
Thara Memory and the Creative Jazz Ensemble will
be the opening act fo r the AR TQ U A K E event, " B ill
Cosby Live. ” Cosby w ill perform at 7:00 p.m ., and
10:00 p.m., at Civic Auditorium, May 14.
The Creative Jazz Ensemble, a five piece group, will
present a composite o f styles from jazz beginnings to
avante garde. Group members Janice Scroggins, piano;
Ron Steen, drum; Phil Baker, bass; Dick Springer, sax
joined Thara Mem ory and his conceronet two years
ago. In that time they have presented over 150 perfor­
mances to Oregon schools under the sponsorship o f
Young Audiences o f Oregon.
Thara Memory began his musical career at the age o f
eight when he took up the trumpet. At 12 years o f age he
had his first professional engagement in an Orlando
Florida nightclub. His interest in the history o f Black
American music and musicians dates from that time.
Throughout his studies at Hampton Institute, Albama
State U n ive rsity, F lo rid a A & M and M a rlh u rs t, he
searched for other contributors. Their contributions are
apparent in these performances. Children and adults
alike p ro fit from his in terest and knowledge as he
arranges, conducts and performs jazz from the ages.
ARTQUAKE ’ 81 is delighted that the fifth anniver­
sary w ill begin with Thara Mem ory and the Creative
Jazz Ensemble leading into " B ill Cosby Live. ” It is
appropriate as AR TQ U AKE ‘ 81 w ill feature Oregon’ s
first major jazz festival at ARTQUAKE: V.
