Where Africa and America meet

meeting: C laudia Asihene.
C la u d ia Asihene was born in Los
Angeles, C a lifo rn ia , nineteen years
ago and spent seven o f those years
in G hana, A fric a , the rig h tfu l b irth
p la ce o f her G h a n ia n fa th e r, a
U C L A g ra d u a te w ith a P h D in
Geology.
M s. A sihene has tw o sisters and
one brother in P o rtla n d and the rest
o f her th irte e n b ro th e rs and sisters
reside in Ghana, w ith th e ir father.
A th ird term student at P o rtla n d
C o m m u n ity C o lle g e , she e n jo y s
m usic, tra ve lin g , sight-seeing, most
organized sports and conversing.
She s a id , “ S o c ia lly , G h a n a is
a b o u t the same as A m e ric a ,
a lth o u g h i t ’ s q u ite h id d e n . Y o u
w o n ’ t see boys and girls w alking the
streets h o ld in g hands, kissing, and
things o f that nature, like you do in
A m e rica .”
S o c ia lly , G h a n a and A m e ric a
(w h a t she has seen o f it) are about
th e sam e, b u t, e d u c a tio n a lly , the
d iffe r e n c e is b ro a d and e a s ily
d is c e rn ib le ,” she said. “ S chool in
G h a n a is m u ch h a rd e r th a n here.
W h e n yo u s ta rt s c h o o l th e re
(G h a n a ) yo u have to pay th ro u g h
the 12th grade, (called fo rm 5) after
you complete your 0 level. N o rm a lly
fo r those w ho d o w e ll, the g o ve rn ­
ment pays fo r your A level, w hich is
college a n d /o r U n iv e rs ity .”

w h ile a tte n d in g s c h o o l.” H er c o n ­
te n tio n is, “ Y ou a ctu a lly learn how
to study because you e ith e r pass o r
fa il, and once you fa il you either try
a g ain o r you stay d o w n in so cie ty
because you never get anyw here.”
She spoke o f c u s to m s , fu e d s ,
prejudice, and petty differences that
have spanned a great body o f water
to rest upon these shores by students
fro m the m otherland. A n d o f those
born here, who should be students.
She continued: “ I'v e noticed here in
P o r tla n d , th a t y o u n g B la c k s ,
(m o stly teenage boys) w ho could be
m o re c o n s tru c tiv e are w a lk in g
around playing cassettes and radioes
and games a ll day, (th in k in g life is
all fun and games) could be going to
s c h o o l and h o p e fu lly , one d a y ,
become great Black m en.”
T h a t th o r n m ig r a tin g to th e
d o w n to w n s e c to r is c a s tin g its
shadow upon m any, and w hile some
m ay not understand its im p lic a tio n ,
u n til the m a n u re h its th e fa n ,
Asihene jo in s the voices before her,
and denounces its need. “ Some o f

ing people and the Black co m m u n ity

d id n ’ t understand a w o rd that was
said. H is lawyer seemed to be glued
to his ch a ir — the o n ly tim e he rose
was to leave the c o u rtro o m . T h e
D is tr ic t A tto rn e y was yo u n g and
energetic, he did an excellent jo b o f
p a in tin g D a v id as p u b lic enem y
n u m b e r one. He to ld the ju r y th a t
D a v id was g u ilty and th a t it was
th e ir sw orn d u ty to fin d him g u ilty
and that i f they d id n ’ t, the streets o f
P ortland w o u ld n ’ t be safe as long as
D a v id was fre e . He p le a de d . He
preached; exhorted to the ju ry u n til

g u ilty. True to fo rm , D avid’ s lawyer
re m a in e d seated; his silence was
d ig u s tin g . The ju d g e went to sleep

verdict.

ro o m . He w a lk s d o w n a endless
c o r r id o r , his feet are le a d , th e y
m ove by th e ir o w n v o lit io n . A s
D avid w alks his sa n ity re tu rn s . He
feels the leg iro n s b itin g in to his
ankles and he sees people staring at
h im as he passes. Ju s t b e fo re he
reaches the ja il elevator, he passes a
w indow and looks dow n upon P o rt­
la n d He is a b le to see th e buses,
cars and people below as they move
lik e ants on a concrete p la y g ro u n d .
They don’ t know D avid is w atching
and he has the urge to shout " H e y !
I 'm up h e re !” B u t he s t ill c a n ’ t
speak — he sees, hears and sm ells
but he can’ t speak.
D a v id ’ s ja ile r is a s h o rt fa t man

has made this w alk a thousand times
and he s trik e s up a c o n v e rs a tio n
w ith D a vid . " D o n ’ t take it so hard

fille d w ith hate, they are angry, b it­
te r, c o ld and lo n e ly . S o m e tim e
betw e e n th e ir im p ris o n m e n t and
release they learn all the d irty tricks.
They learn that they are not im p o rt­
a n t, th a t th e re is a lw a ys som eone
w ith m ore tim e and a bigger crim e.
They learn that there isn’ t anybody
in the w o rld that cares whether they
live o r die. T hey w atch th e ir yo u th
evaporate, they see death, they k ill
them selves w ith hate. T h e ir pain is
tim e and the tim e eats them up.

" P a y b a c k ." The P hiladelphia 76ers
borrowed a theme fro m this famous
singer after losing to P ortland in the
76-77 season and p ro m is e d th e ir
fans that their loss to P ortland was a
flu k e and that they w ould c e rta in ly
pay them back the next year.
But w ith their loss to Boston Sun­
day A fte rn o o n , the debt p ro b a b ly
w o n ’ t be p a id th is decade. T h e
Sixers held a c o m m a n d in g 3-1 lead

to once again p ro v e th a t they lack
the little extra that it takes to win the
