Book tells Ward fam ily history

D r. Bryan E. W alls, and his newly
published book, " T h e Road that led
to Somewhere,” a novelized history
o f a Black fa m ily, were presented to
the P o r tla n d p u b lic at a b o o k -
autograph event on a recent Sunday
a fte rn o o n . Sponsors o f the a ff a ir ,
staged at d o w n to w n G a lle ria , were
m e m bers o f th e B la c k W o m e n ’ s
N e tw o rk and the P o rtla n d O p p o r­
tu n itie s In d u s tr ia liz a tio n C e n te r,
Inc.
The a u th o r, B ryan E. W a lls, was
b o rn on a fa rm in C a n a d a near a
s m a ll to w n c a lle d P ric e in th e
province o f O n ta rio . He w rote "T h e
Road T h a t Led T o Somewhere” to
tell the sto ry o f his fa m ily roots: the
why and the how the o rig in a l W alls
fa m ily le ft the U n ite d States d u rin g
the tim e o f slavery and emerged as a
free people in Canada.
D r. W a lls was the firs t educated
in the same o n e -ro om schoolhouse
in p rice as were his ancestors, and
then moved on to a C a th o lic secon­
d a ry school. L a te r he attended the
U n iv e r s ity o f D e tr o it a n d th e
U n iv e r s ity o f W in d s o r w h e re he
re ce ive d a b a c h e lo r’ s o f science
degree. H is degree as a D o c to r o f
D e n ta l S u rg e ry was w o n fr o m
U n ive rsity o f T o ro n to in 1973.
D r. W a lls n o w d iv id e s h is tim e
between his profession in denistry in
Nassau in the B aham as a n d his
avocation o f w ritin g .
On his travels to o ffe r his book to
the A m erican p u b lic , D r. W alls has
