Skyy. the m illio n -s e llin g g ro up whose new S k y y p o rt LP is hot on the
charts, have a secret weapon.. .a trio o f singing sisters who help form the core
o f Skyy’ s smooth vocal style. But while some singers spend their whole lives
trying to get discovered, the three lovely Dunning sisters got their tirst big

“ We never even thought about doing it fo r a livin g,” says Skyy s Denise,
the oldest. But one friend and neighbor in the Lafayette Gardens project in
Bedford-Stuyvesant where they grew up knew that the girls had talent.
"O u r g irlfriend who lived in the project also used to sing w ith us fo r fun
when we’d visit.” explains Skyy’ s Delores. "H e r husband was involved at the
time in the New York State Finals fo r the Miss Black America Pageant. He

come sing for me at the show. And we said Okay, we 11 do it. We just thought

played like pros, and cast a wary eye when the future-Skyy girls showed up.
"T h e y assumed we couldn't sing...” says Bonnie.
“ O f course,” adds Delores.
"T h e y were just looking at these g irls,” says Bonnie, "s a y in g " to them
selves, Okay...sure, the same old, same o ld ...”
When Brass had to back the girls on a song, " i t was like, Oh God, here
they go - another girl group,” Denise recalls.
"B u t when we started singing, they said that they had to look up and take
notice, because they couldn’ t believe it,” says Bonnie. A fter that night Brass
leader and producer Randy M u lle r recruited the girls to sing w ith Brass,
w hich led to th e ir association w ith R andy’ s frie n d and m usical c o h o rt
Solomon Roberts Jr., who is the leader o f Skyy.
Seeing their names now in lights and on Skyy album covers is a pleasure the
girls o f Skyy never thought about until that night in 1973. "T h a t night every
thing materialized in fro n t o f our faces,” Delores says. "B e fo re that it was
fun, after that, it was an obsession.”
Miss Ilona is one of the death-defying aerialists in the all-new 1981
version of the H ubert Castle In ternational Three Ring Shrine Circus
playing Friday. Saturday and Sunday at the M em orial Coliseum. Wild
