Ask Aunt Bea
Dear Aunt Bea,
I have a problem. I am a really
moody person. When I get into my
moods, my whole personality
changes, my voice, my attitudes etc.
I find it hard to control this “ other
person” inside o f me when these
spurts come. My boyfriend has been
tolerant and understanding o f my
problem , but I know that I am
running him away from me slowly,
but surely. 1 think my problem is
rooted in my childhood somehow,
and I d o n ’ t quite know how to
handle it. Should I see a
psychiatrist?
Frustrated and unsure
Dear Frustrated,
Moods are one’ s own feelings o f
something past, present or future,
and you feel yours are from the
past. Think about why you feel this
and go back and try to find where in
the past and possibly why. Decide if
i t ’ s g u ilt, desire or need and deal
with it there, and leave it there.
Now this won’ t be easy but work
on changing the onset and reactions
o f your moods, keeping in mind this
d id n ’ t occur over night, so it w ill
take time and effort.
Perhaps your b oyfrien d would
also be willing to give support with
this e ffo rt. Give it all you got (you
appear to be quite in te llig e n t in
recognizing this problem and
wanting to change. This means you
can). I f this doesn’ t w o rk , by all
means seek professional help.
A unt Bea
Dear Aunt Bea,
In response to your a rticle last
week about the w orking m other’ s
concern fo r her c h ild re n 's break
fast. I'd like to add, it is most im
portant that children eat something
in the morning. It doesn’t have to be
your typical breakfast menu, as long
as you include the basic four or at
least some o f them (m ilk , protein,
bread and creal, fr u it and
vegetables). It’ s best to eliminate as
much sugar as possible, have whole
grain creals and fruit juices,
juices.
I ’ d rather see a ch ild eat pizza
with cheese and meat with a glass o f
juice, than not have anything at all
for breakfast, because breakfast is
the most important meal o f the day.
It ’s a long time between dinner and
lunch or dinner again. No one
should go all day w ith o u t eating.
Often we don’t have time to prepare
and sit and eat breakfast. So put
dried m ilk, water, egg, fruit or juice
into a blendr. I f you d o n 't have a
blender use a jar with a tight lid and
shake a breakfast. Eat a fresh fruit
or dried fruit.
Years ago, our parents and
grandparents felt quite comfortable
having a piece o f apple pie w ith
cheese or ice cream, cake and milk
or other kinds o f fr u it pies fo r
breakfast. Keeping in mind the basic-
four four; hamburger with cheese,
with or without bread, maybe even
lettuce and tomatoes or other sliced
vegetables. Egg nog is very
nutritious. Left over macaroni and
cheese, spaghetti and meatballs, left
over stew w ith vegetables is also
good in the m ornin g. When you
make waffles on Sundays, make ex
tras and freeze, pop them in the
toaster in place o f toast, you get
more n u tritio n and I ’ m sure more
acceptance from the kids.
Make your own instant cocoa
with dried m ilk , coffee cream and
cocoa w ith marshmallows or cool
whip and use less sugar, if any any
at all.
Make fruit ice with real fruit juice
popsickle with juice and m ilk, fruit
salad w ith cream or mayonnaise,
peanut b utter, even popcorn with
cheese added. So you see, you
needn't have bacon and eggs with
toast to have a nutritious breakfast.
Multnomah County Extension O f
fice is a good place to call for free
inform ation on nutrition for people
with language difficulties, children,
expectant m others and senior
citizens. 8 a.m ., is a good tim e to
reach someone for information.
