Ask Aunt Bea
Aunt Bea,
I have this friend who doesn’ t
work, (I do) and takes it upon her
self to call me every evening or so,
soon after I get home from w ork.
She chats on about her day, kids
and everything. She’ s an intelligent
and interesting person and I like her
a lot, I even like talking to her, but
not every day and fo r such a long
time. How can I stop this w ithout
hurting her feeling?
Joan, N. Portland
Dear Joan,
Tell your friend the truth about
how you feel, let her know that
your’ re tired so soon after work and
have things to do that perhaps she
had tim e to do w hile you were at
work, and there are times you’d like
to sit and relax and not ta lk to
anyone.
I f she’ s a friend she w ill respect
your feelings without being hurt. If
not, things should turn out for the
best anyway, don’t you agree?
Aunt Bea
Dear Aunt Bea,
I ’ m a w orking m other w ith 3
school age children, and there isn’t
much time to check every little detail
in the mornings when we’ re all get
ting ready at the same time (they’ re
all old enough to ready themselves),
however, I do try to make a quick
check to see that they’ re properly
i dressed and have a decent breakfast.
(I d on ’ t eat breakfast) But
sometimes what they like to eat is
■ •a t» « «
shocking! Like left over spaghetti or
whatever last nights’ dinner was,
sometimes leftover dessert!
Aunt Bea I ’ ve tried to explain to
them that they need a better break
fast and their response is " b u t we
like leftovers fo r b re a k fa s t.”
Perhaps other mothers have the same
problem, too. Can you shed a little
light on the subject?
H'or/uziK Mother
N.E. Portland
Dear Working Mother,
I agree that kids or anyone,
shouldn’ t shock th e ir empty
stomachs with too heavy a breakfast
so early in the m orning, however,
on the other hand, sit down and
analyze what it is that the kids are
eating.
As you probably know, breakfast
consists o f many things that are con
tained in " d in n e r .” For example,
flour, eggs, m ilk, sugar, fats, meat,
etc., like in spagehtti, sand w hat’ s
wrong with a hamburgerpatti at the
AM meal or ice cream over cereal,
or oatmeal cookies and milk - milk,
eggs, sugar, fru it. So perhaps you
could eliminate the things that are
shocking and let them continue with
the things that are OK. Then
everyone w ill be pleased about
breakfast. Good eating!
Aunt Bea
