Beech Goldenball teaches sportsmanship
My Little Friends
By UUvsses Tucker, Jr.
Beech Elementary School, located
in North Portland has built a sound
basketball team through the Port
land Park Bureau's “ Goldenball
Program.” ’ According to principal
Charles A nthony, the program is
built
around
sportmenship,
discipline and academics.
“ I feel that kids in athletics
represent the school and at the same
time they should be developing
sportsmenship and academics to
help them in high school. I expect
them to be good citizens on and o ff
the court. If a kid does act outside
o f our policy, we just don’ t kick
them o ff the team. We bring in the
parents to help aid the situation. So
far, we have been very lucky, and
have not had any major problems,”
he said.
When basketball practice opened
last fa ll, Beech had one o f the
largest turn outs in the school’ s
history. It was because o f this that
the adm inistration agreed to field
two basketball teams.
“ I ’ ve been playing on the team
for two years,” said Eric Shamud-
D in,” the leading scorer (21.1) and
rebounding (8.0) on the “ A ” team
that sports a record of 14-1 with its
only lost coming to tra d itio n a lly
tough Eernwood.
" I t gives me a chance to get in
volved in school and helps to meet
new friends. I like it.”
When questioned about his career
goals, Eric was quick to point out
that he has plans other than
shooting basketball.
“ Sure, I would like to play pro
basketball but i f it doesn’ t work
out. I'll just concentrate on being a
better engineer which is my main
goal,” he said.
Bryce Ostgarden, a member o f
the “ B” team which is 2-4 on the
season and lead by Travis Hansen
(leading scorer and rebounder) is
also concentrating on a career out
side of baseketball.
“ I would just love being a
professiona metal fabricationist,”
said Bryce, "ho p e fu lly everything
will work out for me to attend Ben
son Technical High next year. I also
thought about being an astronaut
because I'd like to walk on the
moon and other planets.”
How in flu e n tia l have your
parents been in your school life?
“ They make sure that I get my
studies done,” laughed Bryce, “ and
they have been a big help to me
because they are always there when I
need them.”
I ric, whose father Issac, is a
nationally known artist says he
receives all types o f support from
the home.
“ My parents encourage me to
keep up with the books,” said Eric,
"and they told me to try as hard as I
can to be whatever I want to be in
life.”
Principal Anthony sums up his
basketball program. “ I think we
have a good thing going at our
school. We have good parental sup
port, fine teams, and two excellent
volunteer coaches in Gene Pratt (A-
tcam) and Mike Decker (B-team).
I he coaches are very supportive of
school policy and besides, the kids
love them ”

M y tw o sisters and my other
brother went to the babysitters until
my m other got back. Then I
remembered I had my new Simon
game in my closet. I went by the
closet and I opened the door.
There was a m ilk ja r in front o f
the door. I had never seen it. I could
not see it in the dark, so I pulled it
out and put it near the light. It had
plastic around it and I could not see
what was in it. It had plastic around
it and I could not see what was in it.
I opened the top and guess what
came out? A whole bunch o f people
came out and they were little people.
I had never seen anything smaller.
There were the same size as little
ants and they ran under my bed. I
Everyone was tired, so I told them
that they could sleep in my bed.
They went up to my bed and they
went to sleep. Two hours later they
woke up. They were hungry again,
so I made a whole bunch o f chicken
noddle soup and I gave each one o f
them a big bowl of soup. My mother
came back and I got my bike. My
sister got her skates and my other
sister got her big wheel. My brother
got his training wheel bike.
I showed my mother the little
people and they became friends with
my m other. My m other became
friends with them. My mother kept
them warm and she fed them just
like she feeds us. They became part
of the family.

One rainy Sunday, I had nothing
to do. M y best friend went to his
grandm oth er’ s house fo r the

mother went to G .l. Joe’ s to get me
a bike and my sister a big wheel and

ran after them and 1 put my hand
under the bed. They ran through the
other side and they made me bump
my head on the railing. That got me
mad. They ran downstairs.
I caught one and he put a gold
coin in my hand. I took him into the
kitchen and gave him a sandwich. I
said I, 2, 3, and the sandwich was
gone. Everyone had a sandwich. I
took two loaves o f bread and the
whole jar o f peanut butter and the
whole jar of jelly. I made everybody
a sandwich and I counted to three.
Thev ate all the sandwiches up and
then I met all the people.
