A t Y C C th e y have m ade cedar shakes, b u ilt fences, m aintained the ca m p , dug o u t a s p rin g fo r livestock, and im proved habitat fo r w ild life . Such tasks have p ro vid e d the young people w ith m e a n in g fu l w o rk , and also a chance to learn a b o u t them selves. “ T he o p p o r­ tu n ity to take re s p o n s ib ility ,” says D irector A braham , “ lets them grow socially. There have been squabbles, but they have dealt w ith them and solved their problem s.” Besides p ro v id in g w o rk , another m a jo r o b je c tiv e is to give the Y C C ’ crs some e n v iro n m e n ta l e d u c a tio n . T h e y have le a rn e d to id e n tify d iffe r e n t typ e s o f trees, c a lc u la te d ho w m u ch lif e a p a r­ ticu la r stream w ould support, taken fie ld trip s to a lu m b e r m ill, and a PGE dam, and visited w ith a b ird o f prey expert. “ They get a handon experience,” says C a m m i H a m ilto n , E n v ir o n ­ m ental E ducation In s tru c to r, “ and they take class w ork quite w e ll.” The Y C C ’ ers live in sm all 5 p e r­ son cottages segregated by sex. Each Y C C has a c o t, sleeping bag, and fo o t locker. A t the end o f the row o f cottages is a tr a ile r w ith men and w o m e n ’ s b a th ro o m s . T w o c o o k s p ro v id e s u b s ta n tia l meals to keep the Y C C ’ ers g o in g on th e ir busy schedule o f w o rk in g and le a rn in g . A nd oh yes, there is recreation, too. There have been v o lle y b a ll to u rn a ­ m e n ts, dances, s w im m in g and hiking. The award consisted of a check of $100, and a cer­ tificate for outstanding works. Torrae, a fifteen (15) year old sophomore at Ben­ son High School, and the son of Barbara Harry, was awarded this check and certificate by a combination of managers at Bonneville Power Company.
