M r. Chase is a graduate o f T illit-
son, C o lle g e , A u s tin , Texas and
received his M aster’ s degree at P o rt­
land State U n ive rsity. He was com ­
missioned in A u s tin , Texas as the
first Black P robation O ffic e r in the
southwest. He is also an applicant
fo r P rin c ip a ls h ip in the P o rtla n d
Public School System.

la n d yet to be d is c o v e re d and
presented to o u r B lack y o u th fo r
d ig e s tio n a n d in s p ir a t io n . O nce
again, I w ill do just th a t; present on
a weekly basis, a scries th a t deals
w ith the above subject m atter.
Born In Los Angeles, C a lifo rn ia ,
Alyce M arcus, (o u r firs t role model
o f the series) a tte n d e d J e ffe rs o n
H ig h S c h o o l and s ta rte d o u t at
fourteen (14) in show biz, where she
was employed fo r K F I ra d io station
as a singer. She, along w ith her tw o
sisters, perform ed a weekly series o f
Negro spirituals and gospels. As a
high school student, she and other
m usically inclined students form ed a
band and perform ed fo r m any night
club in the Los Angeles area where
she was lead singer.
As a result o f her perform ances in
this band, she was able to sign w ith
the W illia m M o rris A g e n cy as a
dancer, along w ith a male dancing
p a rtn e r, k n o w n as S m ith and
Haynes.

provem ent associations and w ith co­
op ch ild care centers.
In 1960, A lyce was an au to m o b ile
victim . A n in ju ry to her knee ended
,‘er ca re e r in show business as a
dancer. She moved to P o rtla n d and
reassumed her career goals.
C o m m u n ity in v o lv e m e n t on the
grassroots level has always been her
second lo ve , so she proceeded to
seek career o p p o r tu n itie s in th is
area.
In 1965, she landed a jo b w ith the
W a r on P o v e rty p ro g ra m . F ro m
th e re , A ly c e w e n t to w o rk as an
H ousing A id e fo r the A lb in a N eigh­
b o rh o o d C e n te r th a t was th e n
lo c a te d o n 11th a n d F re m o n t.
A b o u t th is tim e , a new fe d e ra l
poverty pro g ra m , P M S C (P o rtla n d
M e tro p o lita n S teering C o m m itte e )
was beginning in the P o rtla n d area
and she became the H ousing C o o r­
d in a to r fo r that program .
She le ft th is jo b because the area
o f co n centration was to o broad and
she was interested at that tim e in in ­
ner c ity w o rk , so she transferred to
M o d e l C itie s as c o o r d in a to r fo r
th e ir In f o r m a t io n a n d R e fe rra l
S ystem . W h e n C le ve la n d G ilc re s t
becam e d ir e c to r o f P M S C , she
