on P o rtla n d ’ s K P T V -C h a n n e l 12,
answers his ow n personal c ritic is m
w ith personal involvem ent.
T u c k e r p o in ts to th e la c k o f
p ro p e r fe e d b a ck fr o m the B la ck
c o m m u n ity to v a rio u s fo r m s o f
media. “ The Western w o rld is b u ilt
upon the w ritte n w o rd , Blacks w ill
to become aware o f feedback chan­
nels a n d h o w to w r ite le tte rs to
stations and let the media know that
we are o u t there, b la cks have to
demand q u a lity pro g ra m m in g . I f we
d o n ’ t com plain about the bad things
we see on T .V ., the people w ho con­
t r o l th e m e d ia w ill assum e th a t
everything is cool.
“ F o r e x a m p le ch e c k o u t th e
m ovies lik e B uck R ogers, B a ttle -
S ta r G a la tic a , S ta r W a rs, o r any
program fo r that m atter. H o w m any
B lacks do yo u see? D o th e y have
plans fo r us? This is a te ll-ta le sign
o f th e fu tu r e , because a ll o f his
science fic tio n comes true. It is not
that I am being pessimistic, but 1 am
try in g to be logical, and I realize this
is a r e a c tio n a ry s ta te m e n t. O ne
th in g that really bothers me is that
B la c k s are a s k in g “ W h a ts h a p ­
p e n in g " and i t ’ s because n o b o d y
knows. This is 1980 and in 20 years
we w ill have reached the year 2000.

W hen questioned ab o u t how he
received his jo b as a ta lk show host
so q u ic k ly , w hy he was chosen, and
w h a t he re a c tio n s w e re . T u c k e r
cam e s tra ig h t to th e p o in t. “ The
re a so n I was h ire d to be th e
producer o f the show is that K P T V
needed B lack p ro g ra m m in g at the
tim e . S everal p e o p le had trie d to
im plem ent a show but e ffo rts failed.

scheduled to meet w ith the Burnside
C o n so rtiu m on M o n d a y, June 30th
to explain why the grant request was

T u c k e r was a b a s k e tb a ll p la y e r
d u rin g his days at S .E . N ebraska
and when asked about his basketball
skills, he replied, ” 1 always wanted
to p la y p ro fe s s io n a l b a s k e tb a ll, I
s till haven't got it out o f m y system
yet. But a fte r I saw that I c o u ld n ’ t
play on that level, I realized thdKJ
had to channel m y energies in a d if ­
fe re n t d ir e c tio n . In th e fu t u r e I
w o u ld like to be a professional spor­
tscaster fo r the N .B .A .”
T u c k e r, th e o ld e s t o f seven
c h ild re n , advice to young people is,
“ get y o u r sch o o lin g , develop y o u r
t h . B!.ck Educational C an«., |phoW;
w ritin g and speaking skills and ca rry
w ith y o u A r it o t a lia n lo g ic and
w estern th o u g h ts , because believe
me the m a jo rity ru le s.”
I f n o one k n o w s w h a t is h a p ­
pening by no w , then it seems th a t
they are d e fin a te ly in tro u b le , the
space age is c o m in g and we m ust
prepare o u r ch ild re n a lso .”
T u c k e r feels th a t “ the biggest
p roblem in P o rtla n d lies in the root
o f th e e d u c a tio n a l s y s te m .” T h e
average B la ck goes to sch o o l 9.6
years, w hich puts him at the fresh­
m an level in high school. I f there
was in c e n tiv e he p ro b a b ly w o u ld
c o n tin u e , otherw ise he usually ends
up in ja il o r in the streets. Once you
have an education, yo u r avenues are
m uch clearer, y o u ’ ve got to have to
get.

housing is also a problem in P o rt­
land. “ W ith the price o f gas as it is,
m any people are sta rtin g to move in-
to w a rd s the c ity in tu rn p u ttin g a
squeeze on the B lack p o p u la tio n .

were rejected on the grounds th a t
U nited W ay w ould prefer to channel
m o n e y in to th e n e ig h b o rh o o d
thro u g h the new ly-form ed Burnside
C o n s o rtiu m , the C o n s o rtiu m a p ­
plies and is also re je c te d . U n ite d
W ay tells the C o n so rtiu m to apply
again next year,” says Stoops.
