Portland Observer January 24. 1960 Paga 7 Kevin Porter: Sitting on the bench By Ullysses Tucker Jr. Kevin Porter, o f the N ational Basketball Association’ s Wash ington Bullets has been one of the finest playmakers and competitors to set foot in the league. Standing only 5'11, 165 lbs. Por ter was drafted by the Bullets in the 1972 collegiate draft out of tiny St. Francis College in Pennsylvania, the same school that produced Norm Van Leir, formerly o f Chicago and Milwaukee. Currently, the Bullets sport a 20- 25 record and have obviously struggling all season long. At this point their play-off hopes are very dim because Philadelphia and Boston own the two best records in the league. Whatever happened to the team that won the N.B.A. Championship in 1978, or the team that won 54 games last season? Are they still dazed from Seattle’ s display o f basketball wizardry from the 1979 championship series? What is the problem? So far this season the Bullets have played stretches w ithout M itch Kupchak, Kevin Grevy, and Bobby Dandridge; players who must be on the court if they expect to be con tenders. The other problem is that head coach Dick Motta decided to obtain the much traveled Jimmy Clemons (Cleveland-New York) and go to a more patience offense. An attempt to slow the wear and tear o f aging veterans like Wes Unseld, Elvin Hayes, and Bobby Dandridge. The combined age between these players is 101 years old. Lastly, the lack o f playing minutes fo r Kevin Porter, the leading assist man in the National Basketball Association last year with Detroit. He dished out 1,099 for a 13.4 average and later signed with Washington as a free agent. “ There’s not much conversation between the coach and I,” he said after his only visit to Portland this coach Motta has been changing over to a more set up offense and he felt that I move up court too fast. Jim my Cleamons has been playing some great basketball, but I think that I can be used in some situations. At one time 1 was second in the league in assist...things change very quick.” Fast Eddie Jordan o f the New Jersey Nets said, "Kevin needs four guys running with him to be effec tive and he doesn’ t have that ¡n Washington.” George M cG innis, the Denver Nuggets controversial power fo r ward said, “ Porter's game just isn’ t effective with the Bullets. With the exception of Dandridge, he doesn’t have the frontcourt people who can hit the open jump shot. His game is penetration, then kicking the ball out. W ith Washington, he hasn't found anyone to hit. We gave him the lane against us, letting him drive and getting him hung up around the basket.” In seven N.B.A. seasons. Porter has scored 6,000 points for a career scoring average o f 12.1 points per contest, and has dished out 4,777 assist for a 9.5 average going into this season. W hat’ s your advice to young athletes chasing a professional dream? “ I ’ ve always enjoyed playing basketball,” he said so ftly. “ There’ s nothing wrong w ith chasing a dream as long as you know the limitations, or shall 1 say, one must keep things in perspec tive.” “ Pro ball was a surprise for me. I KEVIN PORTER season. “ I ’ ve progressed to the point where I don’t even try to find out what’s going on. We came o ff a road trip early in the season and then my minutes started to decrease. The next thing I knew, I was on the bench watching.” “ How has this situation affected me mentally? To be honest, it's really bothering me because we haven’ t been w inning basketball games. If we were winning it would be a totally different situation, but we’ re not,” he said. “ When are the Bullets most effec tive? Personally, I think we are a better team when we are running,” said Porter. “ I f you've noticed. never knew what would happen on this level, but I knew for sure that if I had failed to make it in this league, I would have had a good education to fall back on," he said. Porter continued, “ Just thank the Lord lor your health and ability to play sports and young players can be happy doing that,” he said with a smile. Police exam target of federal suit The Department o f Justice filed a friend-of-the-court brief today de claring that New York City’ s use of written examinations to select police officers discriminates against Blacks and Hispanics. Assistant Attorney General Drew S. Days III, head of the Civil Rights D ivision, said the amicus curiae brief was filed in U.S. District Court in New York City in Guardians As sociation v. C iv il Service Com mission o f the City o f New York. The private suit was filed by Black and Hispanic police officers and police applicants on October 5, 1979, charging that police depart ment tests discrim inate against m inority applicants and have not been shown to be job-related. The Justice Department brief said the test sought to measure mental processes, rather than the content of the jeo, and did not identify all of the knowledges, skills, and abilities needed for the job. The challenged exam ination, which was given on June 30, 1979, required a passing score o f 94 for applicants to be placed on the hiring list. Up to 4,000 officers are expect ed to be selected on the basis of their ranking on the list. The first recruit class was hired last month and the next class is expected to be hired next month. Based on the examination, only 17 per cent o f the Blacks who took the test and 20.5 per cent of the His panics were selected for the eligibili ty list, compared with 46 per cent of the whites. The New York City police force is now 8 per cent Black and 3.5 per cent Hispanic. The brief supported the plaintiff’ s . . . UNION OR COMPANY D E N T A L IN S U R A N C E ISA VALUABLE ASSET. . .
